Overview Unclaimed Property Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax. The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks and identifying potential changes in tax policy and regulations. The role includes marketing, networking and business development within their area of expertise, maintaining key client relationships, and serving as a source for guidance on complex tax questions and issues. This role is a critical part of the office’s / region’s Tax Services leadership team. Responsibilities Research: identify when research is necessary, conduct investigations, analyze facts and sources, prepare studies of tax implications, outline alternative actions for clients, and partner with Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex matters. Tax Compliance: ensure client compliance with authorities, identify options to minimize tax and reporting burdens, manage engagements to meet metrics, and collaborate with Business Development and other strategic partners to drive sales tax compliance offerings. Tax Consulting: handle inquiries from federal and state agencies, draft responses to examiner questions, monitor work plans for consulting projects, and provide solutions by combining tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge. Tax Controversy: represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues and respond to questions from federal or state agencies. Tax Specialization: act as SALT industry expert, identify cross-selling opportunities, manage SALT services for assigned clients, and develop tools to improve SALT efficiency and service delivery. Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS 109 / ASC 740-10: prepare tax accrual workpapers, apply industry standards and firm policies, recognize and document financial benefits to clients. Strategy Development: develop ideas to advance client or firm position, participate in industry groups, and lead SALT marketing campaigns and initiatives. Other duties as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff on engagements; review work product. Ensure training on relevant tax software; evaluate performance and assist in professional development. Deliver performance feedback and evaluations; act as Career Advisor as appropriate. Education and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or relevant field required. Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or relevant field preferred. Juris Doctorate preferred. Experience Ten (10) or more years of prior SALT experience required. Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required. Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions highly preferred. Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred. Licenses/Certifications & Skills CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and tax applications/tools preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication, strong analytical and research skills, and solid organizational abilities. Other Executive presence and ability to manage client engagements and teams; capable of building and maintaining relationships with internal and client personnel. Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and multi-task effectively; ability to lead and develop a team of tax professionals. Salary ranges vary by location. National Range: $157,500 - $420,000; Maryland Range: $157,500 - $420,000; NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $157,500 - $420,000; Washington DC Range: $157,500 - $420,000.
