Unclaimed Property Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax Join to apply for the Unclaimed Property Tax Managing Director, State and Local Tax role at BDO USA Overview The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation is responsible for providing written tax advice to clients, evaluating and identifying alternate courses of action to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, recognizing potential tax risks and identifying potential changes in tax policy and regulations. The role includes marketing, networking and business development within area of experience, maintaining key client relationships, and contributing as a leader within the office’s/region’s Tax Services leadership team. This person acts as a source for guidance on complex tax questions and issues. Job Description The Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation provides written tax advice to clients, evaluates alternate courses of action to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, recognizes tax risks, and identifies potential changes in tax policy and regulations. Responsibilities include marketing, networking and business development, and maintaining key client relationships. The incumbent is a critical part of the office/region Tax Services leadership team and guides complex tax questions and issues. Job Duties Research Identifies situations requiring research and conducts appropriate investigations Analyzes researched facts and sources Prepares studies of tax implications and outlines alternative courses of action for clients Partners with other Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex matters Tax Compliance Ensures client compliance with applicable authorities while identifying options to minimize tax and reporting burdens Manages engagements to meet engagement metrics Collaborates with Business Development and other strategic parties to drive SALT compliance service offerings Tax Consulting Handles inquiries from federal and state agencies regarding tax issues Drafts responses to examiner questions and challenges Monitors implementations of work plans for tax consulting projects Provides recommended solutions combining tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge Tax Controversy Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues Responds to questions from federal or state agencies Tax Specialization Acts as industry expert in SALT Identifies cross-selling opportunities with other tax specializations Manages SALT services for assigned clients Develops tools or improvements to enhance SALT practice efficiency Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS109 Prepares tax accrual workpapers ASC740-10 Understands and applies industry standards, firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109 and FIN 48 Recognizes, measures and documents financial benefits to clients Strategy Development Develops new or improved ideas to advance clients or firm objectives through tax reductions or cost savings Participates in relevant industry groups Leads marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises the day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff on assigned engagements, and reviews work product Ensures SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff are trained on relevant tax software Evaluates performance and assists in goal development for professional growth Delivers periodic performance feedback and conducts performance evaluations Acts as Career Advisor to SALT staff as appropriate Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or related field preferred Juris Doctorate preferred Ten (10) or more years of SALT experience required Prior experience supervising tax professionals on project or engagement basis required Prior experience with tax provisions preferred Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred Licenses/Certifications CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred Software Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) preferred Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools preferred Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong analytical and research skills Solid organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines Ability to multi-task and work independently or in a group Ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and client personnel Executive presence and ability to be primary contact on engagements Ability to interact with professionals at all levels Advanced knowledge of tax standards and their application for effective service delivery Advanced knowledge of tax research sources and filings Equal Opportunity Employer, including disability/vets.
