*Position Summary:*
The Library Director serves as the chief executive officer of McArthur Library, responsible for the administration, planning, and management of all library operations and services. This position provides strategic leadership and oversight of the library’s programs, staff, budget, and community engagement initiatives to ensure the effective delivery of library services that meet the educational, informational, and cultural needs of the community. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Library Director advises on policy development and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing public libraries.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*
*Library Administration & Strategic Leadership*
· Develop and implement long-term strategic plans in alignment with the library’s mission, vision, and goals.
· Provide professional guidance and recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding library policies, services, and operations.
· Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards governing public library services.
· Represent the library at local, regional, and national meetings, advocating for library interests and funding.
· Provide regular updates to the Board of Directors, including strategic progress, financial status, and operational developments.
*Financial Management & Budgeting*
· Develop and manage the library’s annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors, ensuring financial responsibility and alignment with organizational goals.
· Oversee fiscal planning, including the identification of funding opportunities such as grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
· Maintain financial records and ensure compliance with municipal, state, and grant funding requirements.
· Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and procurement processes to ensure the effective acquisition of library resources and services.
*Personnel Management & Staff Development*
· Participate in professional organizations and stay current with industry trends to ensure the library remains at the forefront of public library services.
· Provide leadership and supervision to direct reports, fostering a professional and collaborative work environment.
· Oversee all aspects of human resources, including recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and professional development.
· Ensure compliance with employment policies and procedures while promoting a culture of inclusion, diversity, and employee engagement.
· Establish and enforce policies that maintain a high level of customer service and operational efficiency.
*Public Relations & Community Engagement*
· Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the library, strengthening relationships with government agencies, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the community at large.
· Develop and oversee public relations efforts, marketing strategies, and community outreach initiatives to enhance awareness and utilization of library services.
· Foster partnerships with educational institutions, civic organizations, and other stakeholders to expand the library’s reach and impact.
· Engage with library users to assess community needs and incorporate feedback into library planning and programming.
*Library Services, Collections, & Programming*
· Ensure the development and maintenance of a diverse and relevant library collection that meets the needs of the community.
· Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational, cultural, and recreational programs for all age groups.
· Implement new technologies and digital services to enhance library accessibility and user experience.
· Monitor library usage trends and assess service effectiveness to support continuous improvement efforts.
*Qualifications & Experience:*
· *Education:* Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program.
· *Experience:* Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive leadership experience in library administration, including budget management and personnel supervision.
· *Knowledge of:* Library operations, strategic planning, financial management, collection development, public programming, and emerging library technologies.
*Required Skills & Abilities:*
· Strong leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills.
· Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, including public speaking and advocacy.
· Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, the Board of Directors, government officials, and community stakeholders.
· Experience in policy development, grant writing, and fundraising.
· Proficiency in library management systems, digital resources, and emerging technologies in library services.
*Physical Abilities and Work Environment*
Extended workdays may be required to accomplish tasks and meet workload demands during peak periods. Requires extended periods of walking or standing, computer keying, working at a desk, and viewing spreadsheets and other written material. Ability to stand, walk, as well as talk, see and hear. There is also the potential for kneeling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, or crawling, and lifting of objects up to 20 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. The employee will occasionally be required to attend off-site meetings.
