Position: Government Affairs Director Employer: AARP Field: Public Relations Education: Master Degree preferred Job Description As the Government Affairs Director, you will lead the organization’s financial security advocacy at the state and local level, partnering with state teams and advising national colleagues on policy developments to ensure consistent advocacy across the country. You will provide strategic thought and policy expertise to state offices through guidance, development of technical resources, legislative bill drafting, policy analysis, and strategic advocacy development. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization and with external stakeholders to advance AARP’s public policy agenda related to financial security for Americans 50 and older. Responsibilities Serves as a point of contact on a specific portfolio of issues. Interacts with federal and state elected officials and staff in a lobbyist capacity. Researches and identifies public policy issues of interest to the organization and prepares summaries and reports. Analyzes federal and state legislative and regulatory proposals; communicates with state offices on policy goals; contributes to advocacy materials. Builds relationships with members of Congress, federal or state officials, internal and external stakeholders, professional associations, and coalitions to advance the public policy agenda. Identifies and recommends opportunities to advance organizational priorities. Collaborates with States, Campaigns, Policy Development, Programs, Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and other departments to drive robust advocacy. Serves as a spokesperson with press and other audiences on issues related to older adults; supervises outside consultants and experts as needed. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Business, Political Science, Public Policy, or Law or equivalent combination of training and experience. 6+ years of legislative and regulatory experience in government, private sector, or non-profit. Extensive state-level advocacy expertise in governmental or intergovernmental settings; strong commitment to consumer advocacy. Extensive knowledge of state and local taxes, state fraud policy, and other consumer financial protection issues; ability to lead state-level financial security efforts. Experience in preparing and presenting policy positions (issues briefs, testimony, etc.). Ability to analyze legislation and regulations and apply findings to support policies. Strategic thinking and policy analysis capabilities; ability to develop resources and guidance for state offices. Collaborative work style across multiple departments. Willingness to travel to various states for advocacy, meetings, and presentations, including national conferences. Remote work and telecommuting can be done within the United States and its territories. Compensation and Benefits AARP offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including a 401(k); 100% company-funded pension plan; health, dental, and vision plans; life insurance; paid time off including holidays, vacation, sick, caregiving, and parental leave; and performance-based and peer-based recognition. For this position, the anticipated salary range is $117,000 – $136,500 per year. The role is eligible for an annual incentive plan with a potential bonus up to 22.5% based on organizational and individual performance.
