About The Role The Director - Tax will lead and develop the internal tax function and tax strategies that support Grocery Outlet’s growth aspirations. The role is a hands‑on leader, translating financial details into operational and strategic opportunities and overseeing all aspects of tax compliance and provision processes. Responsibilities Tax compliance oversight: manage preparation, review, and co‑sourcing relationships for U.S. federal and state tax returns. Tax provision leadership: prepare and manage quarterly and annual tax provisions under ASC 740, including SEC‑compliant disclosures. Financial reporting: oversee tax‑related journal entries and account reconciliations. Strategic planning: identify opportunities to optimize the company’s tax position and advise senior management on tax‐related issues. Team leadership: build, mentor, and lead a high‑performing tax operations team. Process optimization: drive efficiencies using technology, automation, and best practices. Stakeholder collaboration: work closely with finance, treasury, and accounting, and external advisors to support company‑wide objectives. Indirect tax compliance oversight: manage preparation and review of indirect tax areas (sales & use tax, B&O tax, gross receipts tax, sugar tax, personal property tax). Policies, procedures and SOX compliance: develop and implement policies and procedures and maintain a strong internal control environment. Tax audit oversight: manage tax audits and settlement negotiations. Pay Base Salary: $180,000 - $200,000 Annually Annual Bonus Program Equity 401(k) Profit Sharing Medical, Dental, Vision & More! Qualifications 10+ years overall progressive experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role overseeing tax compliance and provision processes. Minimum 3 years experience in a top tier public accounting firm preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Master’s Degree in Taxation preferred. CPA preferred. Public company tax experience required. Expertise in U.S. federal and state tax laws. Proficiency in U.S. GAAP financial reporting of income taxes. Experience with ERP and tax systems. Retail or consumer products background preferred. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team, with excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. Analytical mindset with a track record of solving complex technical and process related issues. Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
