This is a hybrid role based in Brooklyn, NY (3 days/week in-office)
Summary
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York. BNYDC strives to provide an environment in which innovative companies can take root and grow.
The Director of Talent & Organizational Development is a strategic leadership role, responsible for designing, implementing, and managing initiatives that strengthen BNYDC's workforce capabilities, improve organization performance, and support an inclusive and engaging employee experience.
Reporting to the SVP of Human Resources and serving as their deputy, the Director will lead efforts in leadership development, performance management, and organizational effectiveness. This role supports broader HR functions, requiring a strategic and agile leader who can both drive development initiatives and contribute to cross-functional HR priorities when the need arises.
Areas of Responsibility
Serve as a strategic partner to the SVP of Human resources, providing leadership support across key HR initiatives and stepping in as needed to maintain operational continuity
Lead the development and execution of organization-wide talent development strategy aligned with BNYDC's mission, values, and priorities
Identify skill gaps across teams and create targeted learning and development programs that support employee growth and internal mobility
Design leadership development initiatives including onboarding, coaching, peer learning cohorts, and 360-degree feedback
Partner on succession planning and leadership pipeline development
Support the performance management process including goal setting, feedback, and continuous performance conversations
Implement and track effectiveness of digital learning tools and blended training programs
Design and implement role-specific new hire onboarding experiences that bridge the gap between HR orientation and team integration, ensuring new hires feel supported, informed, and connected from day one.
Facilitate organizational assessments and recommend solutions to improve team dynamics, culture, and employee engagement
Collect and use data to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement
Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging learning technologies, and best practices
Integrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles into talent programs
Manage the L&D budget to ensure strategic allocation and measure return on investment
Provide hands-on support across the broader HR function including employee relations, recruitment, and engagement based on department needs and priorities

Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design, digital learning tools & HRIS systems
High level of discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential matters
Analytical mindset; skilled in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to measure outcomes
Strong project management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
Able to work independently and as a team, pivoting between strategic and tactical work
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Proficiency in presentation design tools (PowerPoint, Key Note, Canva, etc.)
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Psychology, Business, or related field required; Master's degree and/or relevant certifications (e.g., SHRM-SCP, CPTM, CPLP, etc.) preferred
5-7+ years of progressive HR experience across various functions including recruitment, employee relations, and performance management
3+ years of experience leading talent and organizational development initiatives
Experience working directly with staff at all levels including C-suite & senior leadership
Experience in a unionized environment is strongly preferred; must be able to incorporate labor considerations into development strategies
