Director, Financial Planning & Analysis

The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) will play a critical leadership role in shaping JED's financial strategy, ensuring operational efficiency, and guiding resource allocation to maximize mission impact. Reporting to the Chief Finance and Administration Officer (CFAO), this role will lead all FP&A functions, including budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic analysis. The Director will partner with senior leadership to provide actionable insights, scenario planning, and financial strategies that support JED's growth and sustainability. This is both a strategic and hands-on role requiring exceptional analytical skills, financial acumen, and the ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for diverse stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Lead the development and oversight of JED's annual operating budget, multi-year forecasts, and strategic financial plans in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Guide scenario planning and resource modeling to support growth strategies, donor initiatives, and long-term sustainability.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CFAO, CEO, and senior leadership team, offering financial insights that drive organizational decision-making.

Executive & Board Reporting

  • Prepare and present high-level financial reports, dashboards, and performance analyses to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and executive leadership.
  • Deliver accurate, timely variance analyses and strategic recommendations that enhance financial performance and transparency.

Financial Analysis & Planning

  • Lead organization-wide financial modeling, forecasting, and performance tracking to ensure operational effectiveness and mission-aligned resource allocation.
  • Partner with program and development teams to support grant budgeting, funder reporting, and evaluation of investment opportunities.

Process Improvement & Systems Optimization

  • Identify and implement enhancements to financial planning processes, tools, and systems to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Leverage technology and data visualization platforms (e.g., dashboards, KPIs) to support informed decision-making across departments.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to finance staff and/or consultants supporting FP&A activities.
  • Foster financial acumen across the organization by supporting department leaders in understanding and managing their budgets.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement in all FP&A functions.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field; MBA, CPA, or CFA strongly preferred.
  • 8+ years of progressive operational and/or finance experience, with at least 2+ years in a leadership role at a nonprofit or mission-driven organization. Strategic planning experience preferred.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning, and financial modeling for complex organizations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with financial planning software and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with experience presenting to senior executives.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional projects and drive process improvements.
  • Highly analytical, strategic thinker who thrives in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Success Metrics

Key performance indicators will be developed in collaboration with the CFAO and may include:

  • Accuracy and timeliness of budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
  • Increased financial visibility and understanding across departments through clear reporting and dashboards.
  • Improved forecasting accuracy and reduced budget variances.
  • Successful implementation of process improvements that enhance efficiency in financial planning and reporting.
  • High satisfaction from senior leadership and department heads regarding financial insights and support.
  • On-time delivery of Board and leadership financial reports.

The Jed Foundation ("JED") is a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation's teens and young adults. We're partnering with high schools and colleges to strengthen their mental health, substance misuse and suicide prevention programs and systems. We're equipping teens and young adults with the skills and knowledge to help themselves and each other. We're encouraging community awareness, understanding and action for young adult mental health.

Pay Ranges: The range listed on this job posting is based on JED's compensation posting ranges. The range(s) are informed by market research conducted across various U.S. regions and are designed to account for geographic differences in compensation. Actual salary will depend on factors such as experience, qualifications, and work location and may not exceed the posted pay ranges.

Location/Travel Information: Roles at JED are primarily hybrid and based out of the New York City Tri?State Area, which supports all of JED's core services and functions. For positions supporting JED's Policy & Advocacy team, the location is based in the Washington, D.C. area. Certain positions may have additional or specific location requirements as determined by organizational needs. Location requirements for each role are specified on the top right of this job opening page please pay particular attention when applying. Also note that JED does not cover permanent relocation costs at this time. In?person attendance is required for periodic retreats or business meetings at JED's central office in NYC or other locations as designated by JED leadership. Additional travel may be required based on role responsibilities, team priorities, or organizational projects.

  • Flexibility to adjust to different work environments, including home offices, shared workspaces, and on-site event locations.
