Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position: Under direction of the Director, Department of Nursing, or designee, participates in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the nursing service and nursing education program of a hospital, hospital center or diagnostic and treatment center.  Performs related work. Examples of Typical Tasks: 1. Directs and supervises staff and support departments, coordinates special services and activities of related support and professional service departments. 2. Prepares operating plans and drafts of plans, policies, programs and procedures. Participates in the implementation of improved systems and procedures, monitoring of systems, and in the control and audit of programs. 3. Prepares data for budget preparation, operating and statistical reports, analysis and makes recommendations. 4. Monitors requisitioning of supplies and equipment. Requisitions materials and supplies for administrative, professional and support service activities. 5. Prepares studies on patient care standards, conducts analysis and prepares recommendations. 6. Attends staff meetings, conferences and consults with Medical and Support Services departments. 7. May represent health care setting administration in relevant functions and programs. 8. Assists in grant proposal writing and in submitting revenue and expenditure reports for special funded programs. 9. Performs other related duties, as directed. Minimum Qualifications 1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3) below. 2. A Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education or an equivalent field and a minimum of six years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which four years shall have been in a supervisory, teaching or administrative capacity; or, 3. A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and seven years of satisfactory nursing experience, five years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or, 4. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State. Department Preferences The Assistant Director of Nursing/ Administrator on Duty is an integral member of Nursing Services Administration. This is a management position that provides supervisory/administrative coverage of the department of nursing, other patient care areas and the hospital in general during evening and night shifts. Responsibilities require knowledge of hospital wide administrative as well as nursing policies and procedures. The Nurse Administrator on Duty (AOD) duties include provision of managerial and clinical links between the nurse manager and department direction in their absence. Additionally, this position will include knowledge of the patient flow/throughput process as they assist physicians and staff in assigning admission and internal /external transfers. Under the supervision of the Sr. Executive Director of Nursing or a designee, he/ she assumes administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services.  Responsibilities are carried out within the framework of the Hospital By-Laws, the Mission and Vision statements, policies and procedures, all regulatory (TJC, NYSDOH, NYCDOAH and professional organizational standards. The Assistant Director of Nursing/AOD will coordinate all patient care and operational activities on the evening and night shift.
