TRIO Student Support Services is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education which serves low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled students. The TRIO Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and overall implementation of the TRIO SSS grant.
Duties include and are not limited to:
· Create and oversee federal budget, monthly meetings with the college Business Office to monitor expenditures· Create and submit federal annual and interim data reports on program outcomes· Program planning, policies, and procedures· Supervise staff of part-time office specialist, part-time tutor(s), part-time advisor, full-time advisor including onboarding and training, managing schedules, job descriptions and responsibilities, approving time off requests, providing adequate opportunities for professional development, creating and maintaining and open and positive working environment, addressing any work-related issues. Bi-weekly team meetings and one on one meetings with staff or similar structure recommended· Participate with TRIO programming on a state, regional, and national level including relations with the Department of Educations, legislative updates and meetings· Planning, organizing, and assisting with academic advising, TRIO workshops, and TRIO events throughout the academic year
· Managing TRIO Grant Aid applications including the disbursement process· TRIO intakes, evaluating applications, scheduling intake interviews, completing intake interviews, completing onboarding process for new students, monitoring program ratios and requirements per federal grant guidelines· Manage TRIO software, Blumen, inputting data, notes, records· Mange TRIO Canvas page· Recruitment of students via a variety of methods including class presentations, New Student Welcome day tables, etc.· Community outreach, presentations with constituents to promote program awareness· Partner with print services and marketing to update promotional materials, flyers, and information needed to share with Department of Ed and federal representation· Manage G5/G6 account and login per Department of Education· Maintaining on-going communication with Department of Education Program Specialist· Professional Development: state, regional, and national annual conferences, plus various virtual national learning opportunities· Attend State and Regional board meetings for TRIO programming· Attend monthly COE State Leadership and Government Relations meetings
· Coordinate with procurement office to purchase supplies, tickets, submit speaker agreements, and sign necessary contracts with various organizations and companies to provide goods and services to TRIO students and personnel· Coordinate with Foundation Office to ensure TRIO donations and outside funding is utilized appropriately· Attend academic advising meetings and collaborate with Director of Academic Advising to ensure TRIO student advising staff are adequately trained on college catalog, policies and procedures as related to academic advising· Manage the Financial Literacy class including content selection and disbursement to students· Planning and executing end of year celebration for TRIO graduates
This position is grant-funded through August 31, 2026. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding. Should grant funding cease, the position will be discontinued in accordance with DHRM, VCCS and college policy.
Employment is expected to commence within approximately two (2) weeks following the extension and acceptance of an offer of employment.
Compensation and Benefits
The hiring range for this position is $57,733.00-$65,000.00. Salary will be commensurate with competencies and experience. This position is restricted with funding through August 31, 2026.The position is classified staff and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies. KSA's/Required Qualifications Master’s degree in higher education, counseling or related field as required by the TRIO grant through the US Department of Education.
Knowledge of challenges and barriers faced by diverse populations of first- generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities.
Knowledge of educational advising strategies, learning styles, and developing non-cognitive behaviors for success for SSS Eligible Students. Skilled in program development that supports student retention and success
Knowledge of practices of administrative organization and management of grant-based programs including supervising staff and management of federal budget.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, rules, and regulations as related to federal grant programs including federal compliance with record keeping and reporting.
Additional Considerations Experience working in higher education or related educational setting preferred.
Operation of a State Vehicle Yes Supervises Employees No Required Travel Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
