Posting Expires: 10/20/25 Salary Range: $107,271.88- $143,207.97 General Description and Classification Standards: This position serves as the highest-ranking technical engineering professional within the Atlanta Department of Transportation (similar to GDOT’s Chief engineer). Provide civil engineering direction, inter-disciplinary coordination and leadership to the Planning and Strategy staff in execution of Dept. of Transportation projects. Provide support to the Capital Improvement Program through design reviews and coordination with related projects. Provide engineering oversight and support for the transportation infrastructure management team. Provides support and coordination to Construction Managers and Project Managers when requested. This position is a part of the executive management team. This is a highly experienced professional who routinely exercises project leadership over complex projects, trains other professionals, or serves as a specialized subject matter expert in one or more specific areas. This level would be expected to have noticeably greater leadership or technical responsibilities than the Senior level. Supervision Received: * Works independently and only sees a supervisor occasionally for administrative supervision on assignments given in terms of broad general objectives, limits, and organizational priorities. Decision Making: The work in this position requires decisions affecting the acceptability and feasibility of construction projects or parts thereof, from initial planning through final design, and then dealing with construction issues as they arise. Has formal supervisory authority over work group (typically at least 4-5 employees) to include discipline, performance management, scheduling, training, etc. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Review of construction documents and related design tasks prepared by others, including on-call consultants, tenants, and local jurisdictions adjacent to the airport. Supervision and review of in-house design. Developing scopes and budgets for in-house work. Provide input and direction for the development of Airfield and General Civil design standards. Coordination with Contracts staff and Dept. of Procurement officials in preparation of bidding documents. May perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge Skills and Abilities: This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully, it is not an exhaustive list. Working knowledge of civil engineering, GDOT Standards, knowledge of contracting procedures and documents; thorough knowledge of allapplicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the job. Good writing skills required; knowledge of GIS surveying equipment; good organizational, management, and technical skills. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in the handling of emergency situations. Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documentation in a concise, clear, and effective manner Ability to handle required mathematical calculations using engineering and statistical calculations. Ability to read, write, and understand construction drawings, specifications, and calculations. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience – 1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, civil engineering or related area. 2. Ten (10) years progressively managerial experience in design covering buildings, bridges, and other miscellaneous structural forms. Preferred Requirements: Professional Engineer registration in Georgia. Strong fundamentals of civil engineering, specifically, pavement, utilities, drainage, large-scale hydrology, earthwork, and road design. Working knowledge of City of Atlanta contracts/procurement procedures. Ability to handle conflicting project demands and set priorities. Strong written and verbal communication skillsWork Schedule: This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work.
