Medical Director Of Hospitalist Medicine
The Medical Director of Hospitalist Medicine will work with WVU Health System (WVUHS) hospitals and associated entities to provide high quality and high value hospitalist medicine services. Serve as bridge between WVUHS quality efforts and system-wide improvement initiatives with various hospitalist medicine programs with regard to efficiency, quality, throughput, and staffing efforts. Collaborate with appropriate leadership, clinical, operational, and financial staffs to achieve WVUHS and Hospitalist Medicine performance goals.
The Medical Director of Hospitalist Medicine will further develop the positive, mutually supportive relationships between the West Virginia University Health System and its constituents, and other potential business partners not presently identified. This position will work closely with both administrative staff and members of the professional staff and its leadership to maintain the high quality of the staff and to help their participation in furthering the mission of the organization.
Under the direction of the WVUHS Medical Group President and CEO and the WVUHS CMO, the Medical Director Hospitalist Medicine will be a spokesperson for WVU Medicine and, when appropriate, the WVU Health Sciences Center in discussions and institutional planning events as they apply to professional staff relations and management services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Medical Degree and Board Certification in primary care specialty.
- Active medical licensure through the West Virginia Board of Medicine or Board of Osteopathic Medicine and other states as appropriate for work assignments.
- Minimum of seven years of experience in a healthcare setting is required.
- Minimum of three years of management experience.
- Minimum of three years of hospitalist experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years of hospitalist experience in a hospital with at least 100 staffed beds, and preferably a hospital that is part of a health system linked to an academic health center.
- Hospitalist experience that includes critical care activities.
- Experience with recruitment, assessing hospitalist service staffing models, and quality improvement.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administrative - approximately 80% effort. Provides development, management and leadership skills to the Hospitalist Medicine services in partnership with regional leadership contracting for hospitalist services.
- Clinical Practice - approximately 20% effort. Practices or provides direct administrative oversight of high-quality clinical hospitalist care in a manner typical of our professional staff that includes use of the electronic medical record, billable services, and teaching.
- Provides input to Human Resources (HR) office and institutional leaders on best practices for recruitment, retention, and onboarding of physicians and associate medical staff, and engages in the recruitment and retention of hospitalist providers.
- Works to understand and optimize workplace satisfaction. Maintains regular interactions with the professional staff and other stakeholders to enhance relationships and integration.
- Supports the growth and development of WVUHS hospitalist service contracts in primary, secondary, and tertiary markets.
- Helps develop, implement, and execute policies and procedures relating to hospitalists services in coordination with regional leadership. Works to extend an effective quality improvement function and process across all the components of WVU Medicine.
- Participates in the development of hospitalist service business plans, proforma analyses, and other exercises related to financial accountability. Participates in the annual operating and capital budget preparation.
- Engages in the oversight of hospitalist locums and staffing agency contracts and relationships. Works in concert with the Emergency Medicine services where appropriate.
- Engages in performance improvement processes within the WVUHS and with other entities as contracted.
- Ensures compliance with local policies, bylaws, rules and regulations, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Maintains an awareness of regulatory standards and guidelines, as well as standards for federal programs and state licensure requirements, including proposed changes.
- Maintains an awareness of regulations, policies, procedures, and standards for third party payers.
- Actively participates in the marketing of the WVU Medicine Hospitalists Services, WVUHS Medical Group, and WVUHS.
- Actively engages and facilitates close working relationships with other hospitalist services associated with the WVUHS that are external to the WVUHS Medical Group.
