Job Purpose
The Senior Director of Development leads the full lifecycle of utility-scale wind, solar, and energy storage projects in the Eastern U.S. power markets and MISO — from greenfield prospecting through transition to construction. This role is responsible for originating and advancing a high-value project pipeline, driving a high-performing development team, and delivering projects on time, within budget, and in alignment with company growth and return targets.
As a senior member of the Development team, the Sr. Director partners with executive leadership to implement regional strategy and ensure delivery of high-quality projects. This role manages a team of Project Developers, oversees project execution, and ensures team performance and growth.
Responsibilities
- Regional Strategy & Pipeline Growth – Implement the regional development strategy within assigned markets, aligning with state policy frameworks, market conditions, and corporate objectives.
- Full Lifecycle Oversight – Oversee and integrate project-level aspects of the development lifecycle, including site origination, land acquisition, environmental permitting, interconnection queue strategy, market analysis, offtake negotiations, financing, and transition to construction.
- Cross-Functional Coordination – Partner with engineering, permitting, legal, finance, construction, and asset management teams to ensure seamless project advancement and risk mitigation.
- Financial & Risk Management – Manage project budgets, schedules, and pro forma economics; identify and mitigate key project risks in partnership with project developers.
- Stakeholder Engagement – Support and cultivate relationships with landowners, community leaders, permitting agencies, utilities, transmission operators, and offtake partners.
- Team Leadership & Development – Manage, coach, and develop project developers, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
- Continuous Improvement – Drive innovation in processes, tools, and reporting to improve efficiency, competitiveness, and execution quality.
- Performance Accountability – Achieve annual targets for MW capacity originated, advanced to NTP, and brought to financial close.
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years’ experience in utility-scale renewable energy project development, with at least 5 years in Eastern U.S. ISO/RTO markets and MISO.
- Proven track record of advancing 500+ MW of wind, solar, or storage projects from origination to financial close.
- Demonstrated experience in interconnection queue management, transmission analysis, environmental permitting, offtake strategy, and commercial negotiations.
- Experience managing project developers or leading cross-functional project teams.
- Strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and presentation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, with proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint for executive-level presentations.
- Ability to travel 25–40% within the region and work occasional evenings to attend community and regulatory meetings.
- Able to walk over undeveloped land unassisted and perform extended computer-based work.
Desired / Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing wind and/or storage projects in addition to solar.
- Graduate degree in business, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
- Experience with P&L management for regional development operations.
