Primary Worksite Location: Seattle office **A resume and cover letter are required as part of the application process for this position.** ***Note that resumes/applications submitted for this position will be reviewed by the hiring manager upon receipt.*** Job Summary: The Senior Director of Strategic Communications & Marketing is responsible for shaping and executing strategic communications and marketing strategies that elevate the organizational mission and goals, amplify our impact, and inspire public and philanthropic support. This role blends strategic vision and creative execution across communications, marketing, content development, digital engagement, storytelling, and media relations to build visibility, influence public will and investment, and position Treehouse as a thought leader at the intersection of foster care and education. This leadership role oversees strategy for Treehouse’s organizational identity, media relations, digital engagement, content development, and storytelling. Partner with the Development and Policy teams to drive engagement and fundraising through integrated marketing strategies that reach diverse audiences, including individual donors, corporate partners, and policymakers. Strengthen internal communications to enhance collaboration, transparency, and alignment across the organization. The ideal candidate will be a strategic, values-driven communicator with deep expertise in communications strategy, public affairs, compelling storytelling, and media relations with a passion for equity and systems change. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Organizational Leadership & Management As a member of agency leadership, contribute to organizational goals, strategic planning, budgeting, and effective organizational culture, management, and communication. Develop and maintain cross-organizational partnerships to ensure that strategic communication priorities align with program, policy, and systems change goals and strategies. Define quantitative and qualitative marketing and communications metrics, set targets and goals, and monitor quarterly and annual progress. Develop and monitor the annual Marketing & Communications department budget. Hire, supervise, coach, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, interns, and/or volunteers to ensure individual and team performance. Serve as key internal and external leader and spokesperson for the organization, representing Treehouse publicly. Maintain confidentiality of information and sign a confidentiality agreement. Strategic Communications Develop, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive, integrated marketing and communications strategy that advances Treehouse’s mission and goals, elevates public awareness, and drives stakeholder engagement. Lead messaging strategy across all channels to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with Treehouse values, voice, and equity commitments. Advise and collaborate with executive leadership to position Treehouse as a leader in youth-centered, equity-driven systems change, stewarding Treehouse’s identity as a trusted authority and thought leader at the intersection of foster care and education. Develop and implement internal communications strategies that foster alignment, clarity, and connection across teams. Develop strategic plans for public announcements, impact reports, campaigns, and organizational milestones. Lead proactive, rapid response communications on issues related to foster care, education, or organizational news. Provide counsel on crisis communications and reputation management, ensuring risk monitoring to spot sensitive or emergent issues, mitigate reputational risk, and develop a protocol for responding to reputational crises. Media, Messaging & Thought Leadership Lead the development and execution of an integrated marketing strategy that advances fundraising, public advocacy, community engagement, and public awareness goals. Build and maintain relationships with local and national media outlets to proactively shape public narratives about foster care, education, and equity. Position and partner with leadership, staff, and young people to prepare them for media interviews, legislative testimony, op-eds, speaking engagements, and strategic partnerships. Organizational Identity & Audience Development Strategy Ensure a strong and cohesive organizational identity across all platforms, campaigns, and organizational materials. Oversee audience segmentation and engagement strategies to increase awareness, foster engagement, and strengthen supporter relationships. Direct web strategy and oversee website management, content, performance, and maintenance. Monitor and manage Treehouse’s online presence, including blogs, Charity Navigator, and GuideStar. Lead marketing initiatives that support fundraising, including donor stewardship, annual campaigns, digital fundraising, and event promotion. Content, Digital & Creative Strategy Oversee digital strategy across platforms (web, email, social media) to ensure a strong and coherent online presence that builds community and inspires action. Guide the development of powerful, values-based content that authentically reflects and amplifies youth voices and stories across digital, social, video, and print. Collaborate with the Policy team to develop materials and talking points to support legislative advocacy efforts. Monitor analytics and audience insights to optimize digital engagement and grow the organization’s visibility. Marketing Operations Orchestrate marketing and communications calendar across teams for all Treehouse audiences. Oversee and manage community partnerships and vendor relationships related to marketing and communications objectives. Oversee editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of organizational publications and digital and video content. Responsible for training staff in agency communications and incident reporting requirements. Requirements Qualifications: 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, marketing, public relations or related field; nonprofit or mission-driven sector strongly preferred. 5+ years’ experience leading teams in communications, marketing, or a similar field. Reliable transportation, current driver's license, and maintain current insurance as required by Washington State, and provide proof of such upon request. Successfully pass the annual Washington Motor Vehicle background check. Successfully complete a Washington State criminal background check. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Successfully developed and implemented comprehensive multi-channel communications strategies, resulting in organizational objectives in targeted campaigns. Demonstrated exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills to craft persuasive narratives and values-based messaging across diverse platforms, significantly enhancing brand visibility and public perception. Expertise in public speaking and the ability to cultivate strong relationships with media outlets and craft executive communications that lead to feature stories in major publications, improving organizational reputation and outreach. Excellent project management capabilities by efficiently coordinating cross-functional teams and delivering projects on time, even under tight deadlines and competing priorities, resulting in consistent on-schedule delivery of initiatives. Demonstrated experience in developing website strategy, managing and producing web content, and video and visual asset production. Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to coach and motivate staff. Deep commitment to racial equity and social justice, and ability to effectively engage in candid conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities and manage effectively in times of ambiguity and change. Professional maturity and integrity with a high level of self-direction and sense of urgency. Ability to work effectively across functions and with diverse audiences, including young people who have experienced foster care or other kinds of trauma. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other essential technology required for effective daily operations in a business environment; knowledgeable about design principles and Adobe Creative Suite. Clear nationwide criminal background check and driving record background check. Working Conditions: Full-time position. Monday to Friday with occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Must reside within Washington State to comply with workplace reporting requirements. Regular travel to the Seattle office. Regular travel to meet with team members, colleagues, and donors. Overnight travel as necessary.
