The Wall Street Journal is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Director of Photography to shape the look and feel of all video content across WSJ Video, building a visual identity across all projects and for all platforms.
WSJ Video blends deep reporting with an array of formats: investigations, short and longform field pieces, fast-paced quick turn news content, video podcasts, social content, and series. We are constantly innovating how we tell stories.
The ideal candidate for the Senior Director of Photography role has a deep understanding of visual style across video formats, is an expert visual storyteller and thrives in a fast-paced environment. You have a unique eye and are willing to experiment, innovate and bring new ideas to the table and stay ahead of the game.
You should have exceptional video story development skills and a love for journalism-led storytelling.
This is a full-time position based in our New York office and reports to the Head of Video.
You Will Deliver unique cinematography direction for all WSJ video, across all channels, building a lookbook for individual concepts, platforms, and franchises, as well as setting direction for studio and field work.
Lead and manage staff and freelance cinematographers, ensuring they are adhering to the WSJ Video style guide and lookbook for all projects.
Mentor and train staff video journalists, senior video journalists, and cinematographers to build and improve skill sets for all shoots.
Conceptually develop visual look and style for all platforms including social and vodcasts.
Travel frequently into the field for shoots across the globe.
Develop new cinematography best practices as needed.
Foster a supportive growth environment that encourages creativity and development.
Have excellent communication skills to work with both staff and freelancers on multiple projects, sometimes simultaneously.
Work closely with production management and editorial leads to ensure shoot costs are kept in line with budget.
Complete additional duties as assigned, including breaking news assignments.
Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of The Wall Street Journal are consistently met: that work is of impeccable quality across all platforms, and that The Journal’s codes of conduct and overall Standards & Ethics rules are scrupulously met.
You Have At least 10 years relevant experience as a Director of Photography, working globally on stories covering a broad range of topics.
An ambitious portfolio of outstanding video work.
A proven track record of motivating teams, fostering new talent, and mentoring and teaching on shooting style and best practices.
Excellent time-management and prioritization skills, juggling shoots and logistics.
Budget management experience.
Passion and creativity for telling video stories in innovative ways, and a desire to constantly push the creative envelope.
Strong relationships in the cinematography community are preferred.
