The Senior Director of Infrastructure Engineering is a transformative and execution-focused senior leader responsible for the strategic direction, operational rigor, and performance of Paylocity’s hybrid cloud infrastructure, ensuring the platforms that power our SaaS solutions are secure, scalable, and optimized for performance.


This leader will drive day-to-day operational excellence, enforce accountability, and foster a culture of urgency and ownership. Reliability is not just a technical goal—it’s a core pillar of customer satisfaction and retention. Our Product & Technology Infrastructure teams play a critical role in both our strategy and our ability to deliver exceptional customer experience.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Vision

  • Define and execute a unified infrastructure strategy that supports hybrid cloud scalability, developer productivity, and business agility.
  • Align infrastructure investments with product and customer value, balancing innovation with operational efficiency.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Finance, and Corporate Development to support M&A, cost optimization, and platform evolution.

Operational Excellence & Reliability

  • Own the day-to-day health, performance, and reliability of infrastructure platforms.
  • Establish and enforce high standards for system uptime, incident response, and root cause analysis.
  • Drive operational maturity through automation, observability, and proactive fault tolerance.
  • Ensure 24x7 availability of infrastructure services, with clear escalation paths and service-level accountability.
  • Lead capacity planning and lifecycle management for data center assets and cloud resources, optimizing for cost and performance.

Leadership, Accountability & Urgency

  • Lead and mentor Director-level engineering leaders, fostering a culture of ownership, transparency, and results.
  • Set clear goals and performance metrics for teams, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and timely execution.
  • Promote psychological safety and inclusion, while holding teams accountable for delivery, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Operate with a bias for action — prioritize ruthlessly, remove blockers, and accelerate delivery of high-impact initiatives.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure infrastructure platforms meet security, compliance, and regulatory standards.
  • Own vendor relationships, contracts, and operational budgets related to infrastructure and developer tooling.

Education and Experience

  • BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in SaaS infrastructure engineering, with deep expertise in both public and private cloud environments.
  • 8+ years of experience leading multiple engineering teams
  • Proven success in scaling infrastructure functions in high-growth or enterprise-scale environments.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, IaC tools (e.g., CDK, Terraform), and observability tools (e.g., Datadog, Grafana).
  • Deep understanding of FinOps principles and active participation in FinOps communities.
  • Strong business acumen with a track record of translating strategy into execution and delivering measurable outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication skills with experience presenting to executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and grow large high performing teams to meet business objectives and quality standards, focused on talent development by creating and enabling an inclusive environment and identifying, coaching, and cultivating high potential.
  • Experience in Human Capital Management (HCM) or similar SaaS domains preferred.
  • Passion for developer empowerment and platform advocacy preferred.

The base pay range for this position is $180,000- $270,000/yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
