Job Summary The Senior Director, Neph/Imm Communications, is the senior strategic communications lead for all external and internal communications for the Nephrology/Immunology (Neph/Imm) therapeutic area (TA), product and pipeline, as well as for Otsuka’s growing portfolio in Rare Disease. Responsibilities include Otsuka’s currently marketed products, future label expansions, and investigational pipeline candidates. The Senior Director will own and deliver a seamless strategy that positions Otsuka’s commitment in the TA from development to launch. This role requires integrating leadership perspectives across Commercial and R&D with real-time understanding of environmental opportunities and challenges, and a clear connection to business objectives while maintaining the integrity of the corporate brand. Responsibilities Develop and maintain thorough scientific and industry knowledge of the Neph/Imm TA, including products, competitors, clinical trial design, drug development, regulatory decisions, and public policy. Lead comprehensive communications strategy and execution for innovative Neph/Imm therapies and Otsuka’s Rare Disease portfolio, including in-line products, unbranded disease education programs, data announcements, regulatory milestones, and late-stage launch planning. Maintain in-depth knowledge of brands, strategic imperatives, media landscape, patient/caregiver/HCP needs, and competitive intelligence to inform communications strategy. Serve as the most senior communications advisor to leaders in Commercial and Brand, Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, and Portfolio Strategy regarding TA, product, and pipeline communications strategies. Align Commercial and R&D on a strategic communications plan for products and future development to anchor the portfolio and drive growth. Shape Otsuka’s narrative as a member of the TA Core Team and with Early Development Teams, Product Development Committees, Publications Planning, and Launch teams; develop proactive communications plans and oversee execution. Collaborate with Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Patient Advocacy on communications strategy and execution at Congresses and externally facing events (FDA Advisory Committees, Scientific Meetings, Conferences). Build and lead a high-performance team across a matrix organization supporting TA communications across R&D and Commercial. Participate in Corporate Affairs leadership to coordinate unified corporate communications and ensure visibility and alignment with enterprise efforts. Coordinate product and pipeline messaging with global colleagues (Japan, North America, Europe) and third-party partners to ensure aligned messaging. Oversee work with U.S. PR agency, manage deliverables, budgets, and resources. Contribute to Integrated Strategic planning for brand and pipeline and shape cross-CA annual and long-term plans. Measure and evaluate program effectiveness and report results to product teams, franchise leaders, and senior leadership. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or related field required; Master’s degree preferred. Minimum 15 years in pharmaceutical brand communications with expertise in product communications, launch preparation, and media relations. Thorough knowledge of healthcare/heavily regulated industries and ability to influence across the organization. Strong time management, collaboration in a matrix environment, and ability to manage multiple assignments. Excellent written and presentation skills; strategic, creative, and collaborative approach to communications. Understanding of the clinical development cycle and ability to grasp scientific discussions at a proficient level. Ability to learn company products, development, commercialization strategy, competition, and the broader pharmaceutical industry. Familiarity with clinical data and milestone reporting; experience building and leading teams; cross-cultural leadership. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in nephrology, immunology, or rare disease. Experience at a PR agency or in-house in a related role. Travel Willing to travel up to 10–20% of the time.
