RN Director – ICU

Overview
An established acute care hospital in the Central Massachusetts region is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to provide clinical and operational leadership for critical care services. This position plays a key role in advancing the hospital’s mission of delivering safe, high-quality patient care while fostering excellence, collaboration, and accountability among the nursing team.

The RN Director supports and reports directly to the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and holds 24/7 accountability for ICU performance — including staffing, budget management, compliance, patient outcomes, and team development.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and operational leadership for all ICU nursing and patient care functions.

• Collaborate with the CNO and executive leadership to align ICU operations with hospital goals and standards of care.

• Oversee clinical staff, ensuring competency, engagement, and adherence to best practices in critical care nursing.

• Implement evidence-based practices that optimize patient outcomes and patient safety.

• Manage budget, staffing levels, and resources efficiently while maintaining high-quality care delivery.

• Lead quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance, and readiness for surveys/accreditations.

• Promote a professional environment that supports teamwork, growth, and staff retention.

• Serve as a visible leader, mentor, and advocate for nursing excellence within the ICU.

Qualifications

• Education:

  • Required: Associate Degree in Nursing with a Bachelor’s in Nursing or related healthcare field.

  • Preferred: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or related master’s degree.

• Licensure:

  • Active and unrestricted Massachusetts RN license (maintained in good standing).

• Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive nursing leadership in a hospital environment, preferably within an ICU or critical care setting.

• Certifications:

  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.

  • ACLS and critical care certification (e.g., CCRN) strongly preferred.

• Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
