Preference may be given to candidates that can work in one of the CannonDesign offices located in the Great Lakes Region, including Buffalo, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, PA.ABOUT THE ROLEThe Regional Design Director oversees creative and innovative excellence in a specific geographic area. Currently, the regions include 150-300 people across multiple local offices, each with their own design leadership.HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO Transforming design excellence
You will be responsible for regional design quality, including regular meetings with senior design leaders, regional design-standard reviews, and overseeing recognition and awards. You will promote Living-Centered Design ethos, collaborate with marketing to communicate regional impact, and represent the firm externally at events. Leading client presentations and capturing client goals to demonstrate design value will also be key.

You will foster a community of designers, set collaboration standards, and partner with leadership on recruitment and retention. As an ambassador, you will demonstrate how Living-Centered Design is reflected in culture and client partnerships.
Transforming the design team
You will nurture regional design talent, promote collaboration, and ensure high-performance teams across offices. You will embody the firm’s brand and culture, demonstrating Living-Centered Design in all interactions.
Transforming the organization
You will be a regional voice for innovation and impact, contributing to regional growth plans aligned with firm goals. Engaging with leadership to develop and implement strategies, you will be accountable for regional metrics and overall performance.
Demonstrable design talent
Evidence of your design ability through a portfolio of significant work, recognition through awards and publications, is required. Your talent will attract top design professionals in your region.
Strong communication skills
You should excel at communicating complex ideas clearly and compellingly, inspiring your region and representing the firm externally.
Leadership, management, and community-building
You will manage diverse creative teams, foster a collaborative community, and be comfortable with managerial tasks like hiring and resource allocation.
Business fluency
Understanding regional and firm business metrics is essential. You will contribute to regional growth and financial targets, supporting at least 10% annual growth, and help drive design-led initiatives across regions.
Innovative thinking
You should demonstrate the ability to develop innovative solutions addressing societal and environmental challenges, challenging the status quo to achieve strategic differentiation.
Collaborative approach
Support a culture of transparency and trust, partner with strategic thinkers, and nurture future leaders within your region.
Business centric
Possess a passion for understanding and improving business outcomes, defining the regional design brand, and cultivating long-term client relationships.
Transforming design excellence: 60%
Transforming the design team: 30%
Transforming the organization: 10%
Performance metrics are subject to change as part of company evaluations.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture (preferred).
At least 20 years of related experience in design leadership or equivalent.
Minimum 3 years leading design teams.
Current US Architectural Registration (preferred).
Additional relevant credentials like LEED are preferred.
Strong portfolio with recognition through awards/publications.
Excellent presentation and storytelling skills.
Ability to understand and implement business strategies.
Professional maturity and effective communication skills.
Willingness to travel.
The salary range is $204,240 to $255,300 annually, with potential bonuses. Benefits include health coverage, flexible schedules, remote options, and a 401k plan.
