Position Summary:
The Program Director provides leadership and day-to-day management of The First. This role oversees staff and volunteers, ensures a safe and welcoming environment for all guests, and coordinates programs that promote community connection. The Program Director also builds partnerships with community organizations, supports staff development, and fosters a culture of dignity, respect, connection, hope, and empowerment.

Position Summary:
The Program Director provides leadership and day-to-day management of The First. This role oversees staff and volunteers, ensures a safe and welcoming environment for all guests, and coordinates programs that promote community connection. The Program Director also builds partnerships with community organizations, supports staff development, and fosters a culture of dignity, respect, connection, hope, and empowerment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead daily operations of The First, ensuring services are accessible, equitable, and trauma-informed.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate program policies, procedures, and practices to meet the evolving needs of guests.
- Ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with all health, safety, and licensing requirements.
- Manage shelter hours, schedules, and facility usage to maximize guest access and community partnerships.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment focused on professional development, accountability, and reflective practice.
- Facilitate regular staff meetings, trainings, and supervision to ensure consistent service quality
- Uphold a welcoming, nonjudgmental, trauma informed, low threshold, and culturally responsive space for all guests, volunteers, partners, and staff.
- Respond to crises and complex guest situations with compassion, respect, de-escalation, and safety planning.
- Promote guest participation in center activities and support services, emphasizing empowerment and self-determination.
- Cultivate strong relationships with community service providers, housing organizations, behavioral health partners, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate on-site access to case management, mental health services, recovery support, medical care, and other key resources as guest's needs/interest arise.
- Represent the center at relevant community meetings, coalitions, and collaborative efforts.
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Public Health, Human Services, or related field (equivalent experience may be considered).
- 2+ years of supervisory or management experience in a human services, shelter, or community-based setting.
- Experience in community building/engagement.
- Strong understanding of issues related to homelessness, substance use, mental health, trauma, and poverty.
- Demonstrated commitment to harm reduction, recovery, and housing-first principles.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in high-stress situations.
- Lived experience related to recovery, homelessness, or housing instability.
- Bilingual or multilingual (especially Spanish speaking).
- Knowledge of local community resources and social service systems.
- CPR, First Aid, or Narcan training (or willingness to obtain).
