Position Summary Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a Patient Access Market Director for either a direct hire or contract-to-hire opportunity in Detroit, MI. This high-impact leadership role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day patient access operations across multiple facilities, ensuring performance goals, productivity standards, cost control, and service excellence are consistently achieved. The ideal candidate will have extensive Patient Access Director (PAD) experience, strong operational and financial management skills, and the ability to lead multi-level teams in a dynamic healthcare environment. This role requires an engaged, on-site presence in the hospitals, driving team performance, maintaining employee engagement, and implementing strategic process improvements in patient access and the revenue cycle.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee patient access operations across assigned facilities, ensuring compliance with SLAs, productivity goals, quality standards, and process accuracy. Lead and mentor a team of directors and managers to achieve operational targets, improve patient cycle times, and drive continuous process improvement. Analyze financial performance (P&L) and manage resources to meet budgetary goals and maintain positive EBIT performance. Support the development of hospital budgets and ensure efficient human resource utilization. Act as a change leader to implement process improvements, staffing strategies, and employee engagement initiatives. Serve as a strategic partner to internal teams and stakeholders, aligning local operations with organizational objectives. Provide operational support to other facilities as needed to address performance or process gaps. Ensure standardization, quality assurance, and consistent service delivery across all patient access sites. Financial Responsibility Oversight of approximately $4–$5 million per market in operational budgets. Supervisory Responsibilities Direct Reports: Director, Patient Access I or II Indirect Reports: Manager, Patient Access I or II
Required Qualifications Minimum 2 years of direct Patient Access Director (PAD) experience. At least 5 years of director-level leadership, including 4+ years managing multi-level teams. Minimum 1 year of director-level oversight across multiple facilities/units, or equivalent business leadership experience. Bachelor’s degree required (Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field preferred). Experience in large, multi-site healthcare systems or service organizations. Proficiency in operational metric management, P&L analysis, and performance improvement strategies. Preferred Skills Deep understanding of patient access workflows and the healthcare revenue cycle. Strong change management and strategic leadership abilities. Union leadership experience (preferred but not required). Accounts Receivable (AR) background in addition to patient access. Excellent data analysis, presentation, and communication skills. Familiarity with healthcare billing forms and systems (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, HCFA1500, UB04). Ability to motivate teams, improve engagement, and deliver results in complex, high-volume environments.
Additional Details Contract-to-hire role requires candidate to live in Detroit and be on-site daily in hospitals. Direct hire role may require 40%–80% travel depending on facility assignments. Relocation assistance available depending on distance. Remote flexibility is limited based on operational needs.
