Job Overview The Training Director will be responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Compass employee training program. This role is instrumental in ensuring that all Compass employees receive the training they need to support the organization's mission, be successful in their role, and continue to grow professionally. The Training Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief Program Officer, and others to both support staff in carrying out their day-to-day responsibilities at a high level and develop leaders at all levels of the organization. The Training Director serves as the programmatic and operational leader for training across the organization and promotes a culture of learning, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities Oversee all aspects of the Compass employee training program including planning, curriculum development, facilitation, facilitator support, and coordination of training sessions (virtual, hybrid, or in-person).
Collaborate with executive team and senior leadership to ensure training offerings support the organization's mission and strategic goals.
Assess organizational skills gaps in partnership with staff to identify shared training needs and interests.
Manage the annual training calendar, including content development, coordination with subject matter experts and external trainers, and ensuring content aligns with organizational values and staff needs.
Work with people managers to create learning paths that develop knowledge, skills, and attributes to meet individual and organizational goals.
Develop and implement systems to collect feedback, track engagement, measure impact, and drive continuous improvement of the training program.
Collaborate with the People and Culture team to support onboarding activities and monitoring of required trainings.
Maintain records of participation in training activities across the organization.
Establish and manage relationships with external subject matter experts and/or consultants to supplement trainings.
Conduct research and stay up to date on learning trends and recommend new training approaches and learning management systems.
Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience as a Training Manager, Director of Learning and Development, Director of Organizational Learning, or similar role.
Awareness of adult learning styles, asynchronous learning approaches, and other workplace learning best practices.
Experience developing and implementing training curriculums and plans.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with at least 5 years of experience leading trainings and/or meetings online and in person.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Experience using data and feedback to evaluate training effectiveness and drive improvements.
Ability to work effectively with leadership, program staff, and trainers to achieve strategic objectives.
Ability to work independently and as a team player with others.
Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to manage multiple diverse stakeholders.
Experience selecting and managing external consultant relationships.
Strong professional skills: organized, reliable, detail-oriented, team-oriented.
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in a complex and dynamic organization.
Prior experience creating training material for a nonprofit service organization is a plus.
Previous experience in a program role within a social services organization is a plus.
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Compass’ work with at-risk families.
Compensation And Benefits Salary: $115,000 - $125,000 annually.
Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation in the first year, increasing to 5 in the second year, plus holidays, sick time, and family leave.
Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children; long-term disability and life insurance.
Retirement: after one year, Compass contributes 5% of salary to a retirement account, vesting over 5 years.
Location Office location: 37 Grove St., near Civic Center BART/MUNI.
On-site role with option to work remotely one day per week after the first three months pending manager approval.
