Scion Nonprofit Staffing is seeking a Human Resources Director on behalf of a mission-driven nonprofit organization in Portland, OR! Our client is dedicated to providing critical support and resources to individuals and families in need, creating a safe and inclusive environment for both clients and staff. This impactful career opportunity offers the chance to build and lead the HR function for a growing team while working alongside a dedicated leadership group. This is a full-time, direct-hire position with on-site work and hybrid flexibility (1–2 days remote per week).
Overview:
As the HR Director, you will report directly to the Executive Director and serve as a member of the organization’s senior management team. This newly created position is the first dedicated HR leadership role, designed to support a growing organization. The ideal candidate will bring significant experience in labor relations, including union negotiations, and have a strong understanding of trauma-informed HR practices. A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, along with a passion for serving vulnerable populations, is essential.
Responsibilities: Partner with the Executive Director, CFO, and senior management team to develop and implement HR strategies that support organizational goals. Lead all labor relations activities, including serving as the primary liaison with union representatives and supporting collective bargaining processes. Oversee all aspects of HR administration, including benefits, compensation, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and compliance. Manage and maintain the HRIS system (GNSA) and oversee benefits administration once the HRIS component is activated. Update and maintain the employee handbook, create and revise policies, and ensure compliance with applicable employment laws and regulations. Serve as a trusted resource for employee relations, fostering a positive, inclusive, and trauma-informed work culture. Lead talent acquisition efforts as needed, particularly during periods of program expansion. Advise leadership and supervisors on best practices related to performance management, conflict resolution, and staff development. Collaborate with leadership to implement initiatives that promote equity, staff engagement, and retention. Maintain HR records and prepare reports for leadership and the Board of Directors as requested. Handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; HR certification (PHR/SPHR, SHRM-CP/SCP) preferred. Minimum 5 years of progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a management role. Demonstrated experience with union relations and collective bargaining in a unionized environment. Experience working in trauma-informed settings such as social services, mental health, or domestic violence services strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and HR best practices. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality. Proficiency with HRIS systems (experience with GNSA a plus) and MS Office Suite. A strong mission connection to supporting individuals impacted by domestic violence and/or trafficking.
Compensation:
The annual salary range for this position starts at $90,000, with some flexibility for highly qualified candidates, plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life insurance; a Flexible Spending Account (FSA); generous paid time off (up to 30 days accrued in the first year); and a 3% employer retirement plan match.
