Overview
Mergers & Acquisitions Tax Managing Director, State and Local Taxation. The role provides written tax advice to clients, evaluates courses of action to reduce tax burden and cost of compliance, identifies tax risks and potential tax policy changes, and leads marketing, networking and business development within SALT. The position is a leadership role within the Tax Services team, serving as a source for guidance on complex tax questions and issues.
Responsibilities
- Research: identify when research is needed, conduct investigations, analyze facts and sources, prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative actions for clients, and partner with Core Tax and Specialized Tax Services professionals to resolve complex matters.
- Tax Compliance: ensure client compliance with authorities while identifying options to minimize tax and reporting burdens; manage engagements to meet metrics; collaborate with Business Development and other parties to drive SALT compliance service offerings.
- Tax Consulting: handle inquiries from federal and state agencies; draft responses to examiner questions and challenges; monitor progress of tax consulting projects; provide solutions that combine tax knowledge with business/industry understanding.
- Tax Controversy: represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues and respond to agency questions.
- Tax Specialization: act as SALT industry expert; identify cross-selling opportunities; manage SALT services for assigned clients; develop tools or improvements to enhance SALT services.
- Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS 109: prepare tax accrual workpapers.
- ASC 740-10: understand and apply industry standards, firm policies and Tax Quality Manual requirements related to FAS 109 and FIN 48; recognize, measure and document financial benefits to clients.
- Strategy Development: develop new ideas to advance client and firm positions by reducing taxes or expenses or offering non-tax benefits; participate in relevant industry groups; lead SALT marketing campaigns and external SALT initiatives.
- Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise day-to-day workload of STS SALT Senior Managers, Managers and Staff on assigned engagements; review work product.
- Ensure staff are trained on relevant tax software.
- Evaluate performance and assist in development of goals for professional growth; deliver performance feedback and evaluations.
- Act as Career Advisor to STS SALT personnel as appropriate.
Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required.
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation or related field preferred.
- Juris Doctorate preferred.
Experience
- Ten (10) or more years of prior SALT experience required.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required.
- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred.
- Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred.
License/Certifications
- CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred.
Software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferred.
- Exposure to standard tax applications and research tools preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and research abilities; solid organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to multi-task, work independently or in a team, and manage a team of tax professionals; ability to build and maintain client relationships.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on engagements; ability to interact with professionals at all levels.
- Advanced knowledge of tax standards and sources of information; understanding of tax implications on client conditions.
