Overview Position: Managing Director role at University of Chicago . Department: AHD Staff: Theater and Performance Studies . This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, hybrid position with on-campus presence required. Reporting to the Chair of Theater and Performance Studies (and/or designee), the Managing Director oversees all financial aspects of production operations, communications and marketing efforts, and serves as a key liaison to co-curricular theater and performance organizations. The role administers production budgets, artist contracts, payroll, budgets, and quarterly reports; trains and mentors students; and supervises part-time student and professional theater management staff. The Managing Director is the primary liaison with the Logan Center for the Arts for marketing, communications and related initiatives, and advises faculty- and student-driven projects including co-curricular organizations.

Oversees day-to-day administrative and management operations with the Chair of TAPS and Director of Performance. Coordinates purchasing with teams such as TAPS Production Manager, Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager, Properties Master, Lighting Supervisor and Sound Supervisor. Oversees and coordinates budgetary needs for facilities (three performance spaces and 5+ rehearsal spaces) used for TAPS-related activities, including co-curricular, departmental and professional theater, dance, and circus productions. Maintains databases, administers surveys, and archives reports.
Manages TAPS co-curricular and production finances, including strategic planning, management of performance program accounts, petty cash and student payroll. Generates budgets and quarterly reports and ensures positive relations with vendors and prompt payment of bills and reimbursements.
Trains, mentors and advises student staff in marketing, audience development, arts administration and general administration. Oversees the staff Marketing Manager. Advises students as an organization and as individuals pursuing the profession and post-graduate study.
Oversees marketing initiatives, calendars, website content and social media for TAPS, which produces more than forty annual productions. Collaborates with co-curricular student groups and faculty-driven projects; coordinates with Chicago Performance Lab and partner projects on posters, programs, box office, social media, photography and videography. Works with the Logan Center and UChicago Arts Communications to raise the profile of TAPS programs and activities.
Serves as liaison for relationships with resident student organizations (RSOs); mentors RSOs in administrative arts management and helps organize orientation and graduation events. Assists RSOs with show selection, rights acquisition, marketing and documentation. Assists with financial aspects of production. Collaboration with the Logan Art Center on ongoing production and events.
Attends or leads finance and management meetings; participates on relevant University boards and committees. Performs routine and some complex tasks in finance, event planning or support services; initiates hiring of students and staff and processes payroll.
Trains office staff on procedures and compliance; coordinates special projects. Monitors financial and budgetary activities, including vendor contracts. Prepares and monitors the unit budget.
Researches and analyzes data to create reports, including reports for grants and contracts. Performs other related work as needed.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
College or university degree in a related field.
Knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, arts administration or related field.
Minimum of two years of progressively responsible administrative experience; familiarity with general business practices; familiarity with budgeting, databases and spreadsheets.
Commitment to providing high-level service; strong professionalism; attention to detail; ability to handle confidential information; excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication; ability to multitask and meet deadlines; strong analytical and organizational skills.
