Leads Johnny Was's product design and creative process, and with partnership of all areas of the business ensures successful, on-time delivery of product. Fully comprehend the Johnny Was lifestyle, aesthetic, customer, and business goals and translate it accordingly. The Design Director works closely with production, merchandising, The Creative Director and Senior Director of Design and is responsible for the complete product design process including market research, design ideation, design creation, specifications and fit. In addition, the position is responsible for managing a staff other design professionals. The position is also responsible for strategically growing all product lines and for ensuring that the development cycle milestones are met.
Position Overview:
Essential Job Functions
Establish, develop and present the seasonal direction for the Johnny Was brand, which will set the tone and direction of the season for all product classifications using both market information and brand filters Responsible for the development of seasonal color palettes and print/pattern. Direct the Design team in maintaining the integrity of the brand and the customer in the design and interpretation of the key trends, including Prints, Embroidery, Fabric, Trim, Color, Silhouette, and Accessories Trend inception concept to line adoption. Partner closely with merchandising to ensure the successful implementation of merchandising strategies, and ultimately line profitability. Lead design team on prioritization of current and seasonal initiatives to meet corporate calendar dates. Work closely with Product Development team on co-managing the sample process and timeline for critical market week deadlines. Partner with Production and Product Development on designing into achievable cost targets. Review garment fit from design aesthetic perspective and work closely with technical designers. Attend fit sessions. Providing marketing, retail and sales teams with product knowledge and serve as an informational resource. Partner with all sales channel in the presentation of product. Manage and develop a design team with a focus on developing strong creative leaders and developed bench strength. Serves as leader across the Johnny Was organizations, creating effective relationships with all areas and levels of the business. Develops effective relationships with vendors, consultants and external partners. Scope, Complexity and Autonomy
Provides direction and leadership through managers and designers. Oversee and direct a critical enterprise-wide function. Adapts and executes functional or departmental business plans and contributes to the development of functional or departmental strategies Functions with a high degree of autonomy Decision-Making Authority and Judgment
Develops plans, including business, production and/or organizational priorities Decisions are guided by functional strategies and priorities Has accountability for the stewardship of business resources (operational, financial, and human) in a manner consistent with defined goals and objectives Education and Certifications, Experience and Skills, and Competencies Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design or equivalent experience Generally, 10+ years' in senior apparel design. 5+ years in supervisory/management role Experience in creative fashion design services and project management. Experience with aspirational brands and retailing. Background and experience in technical design/embroidery Experience with multiple categories/full assortments. Proficient with Adobe Suite. Ability to relate to customer/consumer Solid leadership skills in team building, mentoring and managing creative talent. High level of taste and proven track record for creative fashion design Strong eye for and understanding of quality. Extensive knowledge of color and fabrications. Strong management and multi-tasking, organizational and communication skills. Proven ability to meet tight deadlines and make decisive judgements/evaluations.
Pay is based on multiple factors, such as qualifications/skills/experience, geography, and state and local wage laws. In addition, bonus and/or commission and benefits including healthcare, retirement savings, paid time off/vacation, and product discounts may be offered.
Range for the position is $110,000K - $160,000
