Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced person to join our development department and develop our organization financially through direct donor relations, grant writing, PR/communications, and marketing. The ideal candidate should be proficient with a successful track record in the below and be able to raise $300k-400k per year through the following means (many of the means are already in place, but we are specifically seeking a candidate that can also bring in NEW donors and grants):
Grants: Grant applications and funding proposals. This role is ideal for a skilled writer with a strong track record in nonprofit fundraising, particularly in securing grants from foundations, corporate donors, and government agencies. You would be responsible for developing, implementing,  overseeing grant-funded projects and activities, and reporting. Develop and submit grant proposals to potential funders. Manage the grant-making process, including preparing grant reports and maintaining records. Track grant-funded activities and budgets. Monitor compliance with grant requirements and regulations. Develop compelling grant proposals, applications, and letters of inquiry that align with WPAS’s mission and funding priorities. Manage the full grant cycle, from proposal development to submission, ensuring compliance with funder guidelines and deadlines. Assist in developing strategies to diversify funding sources and increase overall grant revenue. Develop grant budgets and financial documents in collaboration with operations and program staff. Attend program events and coordinate site visits to ensure familiarity with initiatives and identify funding needs. Maintain accurate grant records, funder communication, and proposal documents within the donor CRM system (Donor Dock). Maintain our library of organizational materials frequently requested by funders (e.g. financials, board details, program descriptions, etc).
Communications: Moving our organization forward, including but not limited to: Social media, all platforms. Emails (including quarterly newsletters). Media outreach. Organization profiles on 3rd party platforms. Tours (scheduling and leading). Event planning and management (Visitors Weekends, etc). Marketing small weddings. Marketing tours. Marketing our online shop. Marketing corporate retreats. Marketing other income-generating opportunities.
Donor Stewardship: Maintaining and growing our donor base. This role requires someone interested in donor outreach and relations and able to utilize front-facing strategies to garner new relationships. Learn the organization’s programs, goals, and financial needs to develop compelling proposals, seek new funding opportunities, and report on funding impact. Support the organization in funder relations, including thank-you letters, impact reports, and donor updates. Management of the Animal Sponsorship program, including recruitment, animal bios, animal updates, and stewardship. Data management and database administration (DonorDock, Zeffy, and other platforms). Management of offline donation processing. Donor stewardship. Run our yearly annual appeal with the development director. Run our 401Gives campaign with the development director. Run our Giving Tuesday campaign with the development director.
Requirements and Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, or a related field required. Classes in grant writing, marketing, and communications a plus. At least 5 years of experience in donor development, grant management, fundraising, public relations, marketing, and communications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and grant-writing software. Proven track record of securing at least $300k-400K a year. Strong research skills to identify potential funders and align funding opportunities with organizational needs. Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling abilities, with a proven capacity to translate programmatic work and outcomes into compelling, mission-aligned narratives. Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple applications simultaneously.
Additional Job Information: Potential for bonus at the end of a year for outstanding performance. Schedule : Tuesday through Saturday. Ten PTO days to be used for vacation, sick days, and holidays.
