Food Rescue US is a non-profit food rescue organization committed to reducing food insecurity in the United States and reducing the harmful impact of food waste on the environment. Volunteers rescue donated fresh, usable food that would have otherwise been thrown away from restaurants, markets, and other food industry sources and deliver it directly to social service agencies that feed food insecure families throughout the U.S. We diligently pursue this mission and strive to have our work reflect our values of community, passion, innovation, simplicity, and gratitude.
Job Summary
Food Rescue US (foodrescue.us) – Boston is searching for a strong leader to manage and grow a vibrant food recovery program in the Greater Boston area. The Program Director is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations and developing the long-term vision for the Boston site.
This role centers on developing and managing relationships with food donors, receiving agencies, volunteers, and community groups. While most of the work can be done on a flexible schedule, it does include responding to emails, texts, and calls in a timely manner. Most importantly, the Boston Program Director must have a passion for addressing food insecurity and food waste and for utilizing the Food Rescue US software as an effective solution to these crises.
Responsibilities
- Lead, oversee, and direct all aspects of Boston program operations: food donors, social service agencies, volunteers.
- Manage the Food Rescue US software: ensure all food donor and agency accounts are accurate, pull and analyze reports when necessary, and use the platform for communications with volunteers.
- Create, manage, and maintain a digital schedule on the Food Rescue US app that balances the needs of food donors and receiving agencies.
- Recruit, train, and retain a volunteer network to fill daily food rescues and maintain their engagement through events, communications, and relationship building.
- Manage current Program Coordinator
- Manage Northeastern internship group
- Set and attain goals for growth of food donors and receiving agencies: recruit new partners, maintain strong communication, and confirm success of donation experiences.
- Check in with donors regularly to strengthen relationships and maximize donations.
- Increase awareness of Food Rescue US in Boston through social media, newsletters, public speaking, and media opportunities.
- Represent Food Rescue US in Boston’s environmental sustainability and social justice community by attending collaborative meetings and networking events.
- Fundraising & Sustainability:
- In collaboration with the Food Rescue US team, lead local fundraising efforts with a minimum annual expectation of raising $50,000 to support site operations.
- Actively use Instrumentl, Food Rescue US’s fundraising research and grant management tool, to identify, apply for, and track funding opportunities.
- Cultivate relationships with local businesses, civic groups, and foundations to expand financial support.
- Host and engage with Advisory Council or Boston equivalent local advisory group.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in program management and relationship building.
- Comfort with adapting to new software platforms; Food Rescue US operations are technology-based.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with confidence in public speaking.
- Ability to be proactive, problem-solve, and stay organized in a fast-moving environment.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects independently while meeting deadlines.
- Flexibility to respond to changing priorities and workloads.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to set and achieve measurable goals.
- Experience with Google Workspace, social media, Canva a plus.
- Preferred: Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or donor engagement; familiarity with Instrumentl or similar grants prospecting tools.
