The Materials and Structural Analysis (MSD) Electron Microscopy (EM) business enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries and ultimately change the world. Field Service Engineer
As a Field Service Engineer I, you will support the installation, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated electron microscopy and analytical instrumentation. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will develop hands-on technical expertise while delivering high-quality service to customers across research institutions, universities, and industrial laboratories.
In this role, you will assist with troubleshooting systems, perform preventive maintenance, and help ensure instruments operate at optimal performance. You will build strong customer relationships while gaining exposure to a wide range of applications and advanced technologies in electron, ion, and light microscopy.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist with on-site installation, testing, and commissioning of electron microscopy systems, including:
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure systems operate according to specifications.
- Support troubleshooting and repair of system issues involving:
- Electronics and subsystems
- Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
- High voltage components
- Work with senior engineers to diagnose and resolve technical issues down to the component level.
- Travel to customer sites, often on short notice, to support installations, maintenance, and service needs.
- Develop positive working relationships with customers, system users, and internal teams.
- Provide basic training to customers on system operation and routine maintenance.
- Document service activities and submit detailed field service reports.
- Provide feedback to product quality and engineering teams regarding system performance.
- Assist in updating and improving technical documentation and service procedures.
- Follow all safety protocols and quality standards while working in laboratory and customer environments.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical field or 4+ years of equivalent education and experience in electronic systems
- 1+ years of hands-on technical experience installing, troubleshooting, repairing, or calibrating sophisticated analytical equipment such as SEM, TEM, FIB, or similar systems.
- Experience working with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems and high voltage equipment preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to travel up to up to 75%, including occasional short-notice travel.
- Ability to obtain a valid passport and travel domestically and internationally as needed.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in laboratory environments.
- Proficiency in English required, additional languages beneficial.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong electronics and mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose issues to the component level.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams.
- Familiarity with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) principles and technology.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently after training.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and service management software.
- Experience documenting service activities and preparing detailed reports.
- Ability to effectively train and support customers on equipment operation.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and quality standards.
- Demonstrated success contributing to customer satisfaction goals.
Compensation and Benefits
The hourly pay range estimated for this position Engineer I, Field Service based in California is $27.19–$41.86.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
