Job Description
We are seeking a visionary and decisive Executive State Director to lead our operations in New Jersey, based in New Brunswick. This key leadership role will drive our organization's mission, shape policy initiatives, and oversee all aspects of our state-level programs and activities.
Develop and execute strategic plans aligned with organizational goals and New Jersey's specific needs
Manage state-level budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and maximizing resource allocation
Lead policy development and implementation, advocating for our organization's interests at the state level
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, and partner organizations
Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization in New Jersey, representing us in media appearances and public events
Oversee and motivate a team of four Area Directors who oversee approximately 275 staff, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation
Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including state and federal grants, to support program expansion
Monitor and analyze state and local political landscapes to inform organizational strategy and decision-making
Ensure compliance with all relevant state and federal regulations
Collaborate with national leadership to align state-level initiatives with broader organizational objectives
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree mandatory; Master's degree strongly preferred in Public Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field
Minimum of 7 years of extensive experience in the social service sector, with no less than 5 years in senior leadership roles specifically within the field of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD)
Demonstrable record of successful program implementation and organizational expansion, with concrete examples of achievements
Proven expertise in strategic planning, fiscal management, and policy formulation, with a focus on long-term organizational sustainability
Superior public speaking and communication abilities, capable of effectively influencing and inspiring diverse audiences in high-stakes environments
Extensive experience in developing and managing financial budgets exceeding $10 million, with a keen eye for fiscal responsibility and resource optimization
Comprehensive understanding of state and federal funding mechanisms and grant processes within social services and waiver-funded programs, including the ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes
Proven track record in high-level stakeholder engagement and relationship building, particularly with government officials and community leaders
Exceptional team leadership and management capabilities, with demonstrated success in overseeing and motivating teams of over 100 staff members
Advanced proficiency in data analysis and performance metrics utilization to drive strategic decision-making and organizational improvement
Strong preference will be given to candidates possessing in-depth knowledge of New Jersey's DD/ID political landscape, socioeconomic challenges, funding sources, and regulatory environment
Other Details:
The state director's schedule is Monday- Friday 8:30AM- 5:00PM (FLEX) and should anticipate evening, weekend hours and overnight stays; to meet the needs of subordinates, customers, and external entities, and to achieve organizational outcomes.
Travel within the state of New Jersey is required approximately 20-25% of time. Onsite in office in New Brunswick is required.
