Executive Director Of The Academic Simulation Center

The University of Louisville seeks an experienced Executive Director of the Academic Simulation Center who will be responsible for the strategic vision, management, and daily operations of a state-of-the-art, interprofessional simulation facility. This role ensures the effective integration of simulation-based education, training, and research into the academic curriculum while promoting innovation, and quality improvement. This innovative Executive Director is responsible for facilitating interprofessional collaboration between the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Public Health and Informational Sciences, while maintaining discipline specific simulation practices needed to maintain accreditation. The Executive Director will work closely with faculty, staff, students, residents and external partners to advance the Center's mission and enhance experiential learning opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Program Development

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the New HSC Simulation Center aligned with the institution's mission and educational goals.
  • Foster collaboration among HSC academic programs, clinical partners, community and corporate partners, and other partners to optimize the use of simulation-based learning.
  • Facilitate interprofessional simulation utilization and growth between the (4) HSC schools.
  • Incorporate best practices of simulation-based education.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies to support simulation-based education.
  • Demonstrates understanding, including authored/co-authored publications, and profound interest in simulation education and research.
  • Develop and execute a plan for achieving center accreditation within five years by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, INACSL, the Association of SP Educators, and other relevant accrediting associations.
  • Develop innovative outreach simulation-based programs that address community, regional, and state needs.

Operations & Facility Management

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Simulation Center, including scheduling, annual operations budgeting, procurement, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Develop and consistently administer policies and procedures to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Center.
  • Uphold and apply ethical practices to all simulation work in the center, as guided by the simulationist code of ethics in healthcare ethical standards, INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice, and ASPE Standards of Best Practice.
  • Oversee the preparation, maintenance, inventory and operation of all simulation equipment and supplies.

Educational & Curriculum Integration

  • Collaborate with faculty and leadership at each HSC school to design, implement, and assess simulation-based learning experiences that align with program competencies, learning objectives, and standards of interprofessional practice.
  • Lead faculty development initiatives to enhance the use of simulation methodologies.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality simulation scenarios, including high and low fidelity patient simulations, human simulation with simulation participants (SPs), task trainers, virtual/extended reality simulation, and other technologies as they emerge.
  • Integrate Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), Graduate Medical Education (GME), hospital partners, and community/educational partners for simulation utilization.

Research & Innovation

  • Promote and support research initiatives and active publication related to simulation-based education and healthcare training.
  • Seek funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to advance the Center's capabilities and offerings.
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement initiatives and data-driven decision-making to enhance the impact of simulation on student learning outcomes and patient outcomes within the healthcare system and throughout the region.

Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise and mentor an interprofessional team of simulation specialists, technicians, educators, and administrative personnel.
  • Provide professional development opportunities and foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Ensure adequate management of staffing and training, and resource allocation to support the Center's operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher in healthcare, education, simulation technology, or a related field or Medical degree (M.D., D.O.) or Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., DNP, or equivalent) in a related discipline.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of leadership experience in simulation-based education, clinical education, or healthcare training.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including program development and team management.
  • Strong knowledge of simulation methodologies, technologies, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of simulation-based scholarship as a field of inquiry.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to work in a dynamic environment and adaptability to change.
  • Certification in healthcare simulation (e.g., CHSE, CHSOS).
  • Experience in grant writing, research, and publication in simulation-based education.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements for simulation programs.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
