- Reviews processes and discharge analyses and, in conjunction with the Environmental Manager, Design Engineer, and Environmental Specialist, makes recommendations on improving or correcting areas that are inefficient or outside of standard limits. Ensures compliance with environmental laws. Ensures all required permits, new or renewal, for AMERICAN have been applied for.
- Works with Senior Vice President of Engineering, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, Design Engineers, and others with risk mitigation strategies. Also, works with these individuals on various Engineering projects.
- Oversees the collection and analysis of environmental samples, reviews interpretation of findings, and drives the implementation of corrective actions or risk mitigation strategies.
- Investigates allegations of compliance violations by employees or Company representatives. Serves as an organizational representative during inspections by external authorities or governing bodies.
- Supervises and manages the environmental work unit.
- Interviews, makes hiring recommendations, trains, evaluates, motivates, and as necessary, disciplines and makes discharge recommendations for employees to the Senior Vice President of Engineering. Helps ensure safety and well-being of employees.
- Pursues continuing personal improvement and development as it relates to job knowledge and performance.
- Tracks developing laws and regulations. Works with local, state, and federal legislators, serves on environmentally-related committees, and serves as Technical Advisor to the Business Council of Alabama in order to appropriately influence developing laws and regulations.
- Communicates with departmental environmental personnel and in-plant personnel to consult on potential problems, gain feedback on potential solutions to existing problems and collect data for permitting and compliance reporting.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
- Acts in an environmental auditing and consulting capacity for AMERICAN's subsidiaries when needed.
- Works with the area neighborhood associations on all issues involving AMERICAN such as zoning, development, operations, etc. This may include attending neighborhood association meetings.
- Ensures permit applications for regulated air, water, solid, and hazardous waste sources are submitted.
- Monitors, collects, and analyzes samples during inclement weather conditions, when needed, exposing incumbent to all types of weather conditions (e.g., rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.)
- Oversees the development and implementation of cost-effective chemical/physical treatment processes for air, water, solid, and hazardous/non-hazardous waste sources.
- Ensures hazardous/non-hazardous waste and materials are disposed of properly.
- Ensures various chemicals are handled with proper care at the Treating Station.
- Directs the activities of the departmental environmental coordinators and other professionals, both internal and external, during the development of permits and compliance reports.
- Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or Civil Engineering from an ABET EAC accredited program at a four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided. OR Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET EAC accredited program at a four-year college or university or a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry or Biology from an accredit four-year college or university, with eight years of full-time work experience related to environmental compliance. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
- Must possess a State of Alabama Professional Engineers License.
- Must exhibit a working knowledge of technical information, such as technical aspects of manufacturing processes in order to apply environmental standards, procedures necessary to determine the proper chemical treatment levels for cooling towers, and procedures necessary for the proper disposal of waste.
- Must exhibit a working knowledge of AMERICAN's and its subsidiaries' manufacturing processes and products, or similar processes and products.
- Must exhibit prior experience working with environmental regulations, which includes implementation and continuous compliance.
- Must exhibit excellent management and leadership skills.
- Must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with persons of different socio-economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds. Must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with others and establish and maintain effective working relationships.

- Must possess and maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) HazMat/49 CFR Part 172 certification.
- Must possess and maintain a current Smoke School Certification (both field and lecture).
- Must be willing and able to work extra hours on weekdays, weekends, or holidays as required to fulfill job duties.

- Due to the hazardous nature of the job environment (mobile equipment, overhead cranes, etc.), an acceptable level of vision and hearing is required in order to identify and respond to visual and audible warnings in a safe manner.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Environmental Management from an accredited four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
- Exhibit the ability to read and interpret product codes and specifications for projects, such as technical drawings.
- Exhibit thorough knowledge of AMERICAN Engineering Department policies and procedures.
- Exhibit six years of prior work experience as an Environmental Manager or Design Engineer in the Environmental Compliance Department at AMERICAN or similar work experience in a manufacturing company.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sitting required for driving and for long periods of time while performing desk activities, such as writing, using computer, reading, etc.
- Standing and walking required within building to copier, to other departments, at file cabinets, within plant (on even and uneven surfaces), work area, etc.
- Climbing stairs required to access offices and areas in the plant as needed. Climbing ladder occasionally required to access bag houses and cooling towers. Balancing required when maneuvering in work areas and in plant.
- Stooping, kneeling, and crouching required to obtain files, take samples, work in the plant, etc.
- Overhead reach required to obtain files, records, etc. from upper shelves.
- Forward reach required to drive and to perform desk activities, including computer work, using phone, etc.
- Bended reach required to access lower file and desk drawers.
- Handling required for holding phone, stapler, files, performing various other desk activities, etc.
- Use of fingers required for writing, computer work, phone, etc.
- Talking required for communication via telephone and person-to-person with different departments, governmental regulatory personnel, legislators, and personnel within Engineering, etc.
- Hearing required for telephone, meetings, person-to-person communication, safety, etc.
- Vision required for safety within the plant, quality of work, to read drawings, etc.
- Lifting and carrying occasionally required for drawings up to 20 pounds. Lifting and carrying required for items usually weighing 10 pounds or less, such as files, records, books, etc.
- Pushing and pulling required for file drawers with up to five to 10 pounds of force.
