Confidential Search: Director of Emergency Department

Location: Pacific Northwest – Critical Access Hospital (Level IV Trauma)

Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer

Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview

We are conducting a confidential search for an experienced, results-driven Director of Emergency Department to lead operations at a busy Level IV trauma center within a critical access hospital. This role offers the opportunity to bring fresh leadership, stabilize staffing, and elevate performance metrics in a high-impact department that serves as a cornerstone of community healthcare.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational oversight for the Emergency Department, ensuring optimal staffing, patient flow, and clinical quality.
  • Drive improvement in key metrics, including Left Without Being Seen (LWBS) rates.
  • Oversee implementation of telehealth programs, including TeleStroke and behavioral health/substance use support initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain standards for quality, safety, and patient satisfaction.
  • Mentor and develop a diverse ED team, including seasoned staff, new graduates, and nurse tech participants.
  • Partner with nursing leadership to standardize processes and share best practices across departments.
  • Manage departmental budget and resource allocation to align with patient care needs.
  • Implement recruitment and retention strategies to reduce reliance on temporary staffing.
Qualifications
  • Current WA RN license (or eligibility for reciprocity).
  • Minimum 2–3 years of leadership experience in an ED setting; experience in larger hospital environments considered.
  • Strong background in trauma care and/or critical access operations preferred.
  • Proven track record in leading change, mentoring teams, and improving quality outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
