When it comes to providing opportunities to people with disabilities, Westchester County is committed to doing everything it can. The Office for People with Disabilities acts as a clearinghouse of information for persons with disabilities, their families and advocates. Additionally, the office manages ParaTransit in Westchester County. Under the general supervision of the County Executive, the Director is responsible for administering, planning, coordination, directing and implementing programs and activities for individuals with disabilities. The role also involves coordinating the efforts of community organizations that serve the people with disabilities and advising the County Executive and other County Departments on related issues. Supervision is exercised over a number of support staff. Does related work as required Examples of Work Include but Not Limited to: Acts as a liaison between County Office for People with Disabilities and Federal, State and Local government agencies; Administers the operations of the Office for People with Disabilities including staffing, supervision, budgeting, grant application and formulation of practices and procedures; Able to conduct a County wide needs assessment to better identify and meet the needs of the disability community with a comprehensive plan of action. This includes connecting with existing planning efforts and opportunities. Works with public officials, County Departments, community, schools, business leaders, and advocates to identify, develop and implement awareness programs and educational workshops; Works with public officials, County Departments, community, schools, business leaders, and advocates to identify, develop and implement awareness programs and educational workshops; Work closely with the Department of Community Mental Health and ensure that the public understands the relationship between these departments and services and supports that exist; Ensure that the office is a source for current and correct information and referrals for people with disabilities and their families; Recommends and proposes public policy positions on the disability community and families to the County Executive; Works closely with DOT to ensure paratransit services are delivered efficiently and effectively, meeting the needs of paratransit clients; Acts as the ADA Coordinator for Westchester County; Recommends legislation and public policy positions related to individuals with disabilities and their families to the County Executive; Supports County Departments by educating and assisting them with reasonable accommodations and other disability-specific issues; Conduct workshops, meetings and information to both County employees, outside organizations, individuals and caregivers; Applicants should have a proven track record and a commitment to accessibility and inclusion for PWD. Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience : A Bachelor's Degree and five years’ experience in a public or private agency specializing in serving a multi-generational population of individuals with disabilities. Lived experience of disability is preferred, but not required Substitution : Satisfactory completion of 30 credits towards a Master's Degree may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to two years of the above stated experience. The compensation package includes comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, deferred compensation, paid leave and NYS retirement plan.
