Job Description Summary
The Director of Strategic Metrics & Insights provides strategic leadership in defining, developing, and institutionalizing performance measurement frameworks across Finance & Administration and other enterprise initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Business Strategy & Transformation, this role is responsible for designing and executing the strategic KPI portfolio that measures progress toward institutional goals.
This role transforms data into strategic intelligence, leveraging advanced reporting platforms (Tableau, Workday Reporting/Prism Analytics) and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The Director ensures that executives and stakeholders have actionable insights that support data-informed decision-making, foster a culture of accountability and innovation, and demonstrate the value of institutional transformation.
Job Description
Essential Functions
Define and maintain a portfolio of strategic metrics that measure performance against enterprise initiatives, transformation projects, and long-term strategic priorities.
Establish consistent frameworks and methodologies for performance measurement across the institution.
Build and lead a Strategic Metrics Roadmap that integrates predictive analytics, AI, and advanced tools to provide forward-looking insights.
Leverage machine learning and automation to improve forecasting, risk identification, and progress tracking.
Design, implement, and oversee F&A and enterprise dashboards, balanced scorecards, and KPI reporting tools in Tableau, Workday Reporting, and other BI platforms.
Provide executives and governance bodies with clear, concise, and actionable performance intelligence.
Collaborate closely with Information Systems (IS) data engineering teams to define data requirements and guide the development and maintenance of secure, scalable, and automated data pipelines. This partnership is critical for ensuring the data integrity, reliability, and accuracy required for all dashboards, advanced analytics, and AI/ML initiatives.
Partner with Finance, HR, Facilities, IS, and Academic leaders to embed metrics and KPIs into transformation and operational projects.
Supervises Business Analysts responsible for maintaining Balanced Scorecards and dashboards, building tools and reporting solutions, and delivering high-quality analysis while fostering professional growth and development. Translate technical data into narratives that inform executive decision-making and build trust across the community.
Promote a culture of evidence-based performance management, ensuring KPIs drive accountability and continuous improvement.
Identify opportunities to refine metrics, streamline reporting, and improve institutional agility.
Monitor industry best practices and trends in performance management and higher education analytics.
Lead pilots of cutting-edge AI and visualization tools to expand institutional performance capabilities.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Bachelors degree in Business, Analytics, Information Systems, Industrial Engineering, or related field; Masters degree in Business Analytics, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
8 years of experience leading performance measurement, KPI development, or enterprise analytics in large, complex organizations (higher education or nonprofit transformation experience preferred), with demonstrated supervisory experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Demonstrated success in creating and scaling institutional KPI frameworks.
Proficiency in Tableau, Workday Reporting/Prism Analytics, and enterprise BI tools.
Knowledge of AI/ML applications, forecasting, and automation for performance measurement.
Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills.
Excellent communication and storytelling ability, able to present data as strategic insight for executives.
Preferred Experience
Experience in higher education administration or nonprofit performance analytics.
Experience leading reporting or ERP optimization initiatives (Workday strongly preferred).
Accountabilities
Supervises staff and/or external consultants engaged in KPI design and reporting.
Ensures consistency in enterprise performance reporting and governance.
Provides actionable recommendations to senior executives and governing boards.
