The Director, Purchasing Energy and Utilities, is a strategic role that leads the Energy & Utilities Purchasing category covering 278 sites (223 plants and 52 warehouses) for North America. The Director also manages utility account oversight and infrastructure in water, sewer, and industrial gas service types. These services integrate seamlessly to provide expert internal consulting and partnered project delivery for all energy and utility functions across the portfolio, including physical infrastructure/engineering, real estate, and project finance in the hundreds of millions of USD per year outside of core spend. Collectively, the Energy & Utilities category covers $635 MUSD of spend.
This position is responsible for deployment as well as ongoing management of the regions new MR4 Energy Model, a cost-minimizing Scope 1 and 2 decarbonization program that covers 100% of sites in the Region and enables Saint-Gobain North America to achieve both 2030 and 2050 decarbonization goals. The Energy Purchasing team is a strategic organization aligned with all North America businesses, providing best solutions on cost and carbon reduction solutions.
What will you do?
Market Intelligence and Reporting
Maintain expert knowledge of 3,000+ North American energy and carbon markets, including pricing and infrastructure trends.
Provide advanced analytics and reporting on energy markets, including gas and renewable energy attributes.
Utility Account & Bill Management
Open/close utility accounts, manage deposits, and ensure service delivery.
Coordinate utility account setup with vendors and internal teams to avoid service issues.
Support applications for utility incentives.
Budgets & Reforecasts
Use internal tools to forecast energy/utility costs and explain variances to Finance and BU leads.
Integrate variables like hedges, production, and taxes into models.
Provide real-time forecasting tools and custom reporting for business alignment.
Hedging
Lead regional hedge strategy in coordination with Finance and Group Purchasing.
Analyze markets to guide hedge timing, pricing, and exposure.
Execute and monitor hedge performance, both financial and physical.
Renewable Energy
Drive renewable procurement strategies aligned with decarbonization goals.
Manage sourcing and due diligence for VPPAs, solar, wind, and storage.
Oversee REC/carbon offset purchases and community solar projects.
Develop executive-level business cases for renewable investments.
Alternative Fuels
Evaluate cost and feasibility of switching fuels/electrification for Scope 1 reduction.
Forecast infrastructure needs and compare alternative fuel options using economic models.
Energy Resiliency
Identify opportunities for microgrids and improve site resiliency.
Investigate power quality issues and manage industrial gas risks.
Resolve pipeline capacity issues and support physical energy balancing.
Energy Auditing & Efficiency
Provide vendor-led energy audits, submeters, and process mapping for efficiency.
Collaborate on analysis and approvals for CapEx energy projects.
Create tools for load analysis, anomaly detection, and operational cost-saving alerts
What do you bring?
10+ years of experience in energy and utility management, 7 in a management position with direct reports
Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP) certification by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) required
Experience developing energy and utility management programs as new functions departments
Experience in renewable energy and emerging technology procurement
Strong knowledge of energy markets, energy sources and the entire value chain.
Good understanding and knowledge of financial markets and financial instruments, as well as related aspects (contractual, accounting etc).
