Main Purpose of Job
This position serves as the Director of the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration
(PHPA), a major unit within the Public Health Services Administration at the Maryland
Department of Health. The Director oversees over 500 staff and an annual budget of over $500
million, as well as the activities of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Environmental
Health Bureau, the Cancer and Chronic Disease Bureau, the Infectious Disease Epidemiology
and Outbreak Response Bureau; the Infectious Disease Prevention and Health Services Bureau;
PHPA’s Office of Budget and Finance, Operations, and Office of Support Services. The position
reports to and works in close collaboration with the Deputy Secretary of Public Health Services
and departmental leadership to improve the health of Marylanders. The Director leads the
development of strategies, communications, policies, and programs for PHPA. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified applicants must possess a doctorate degree in medicine (MD) from an accredited college or university, a valid Maryland license to practice medicine, Board Certification, and at least eight years of public health leadership experience in a clinical or public health setting and at least five years of management experience in public health at either the federal, state or local level.
