Haverford College seeks a Director of the Writing Program.
Haverford College invites applications for the position of Director of the Writing Program in an open rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor as appropriate) continuing non-tenure-track appointment to start July 2026 . We seek an accomplished teacher and academic leader who will guide the Writing Program (https://www.haverford.edu/writing-program) in fostering strong writing practices across the curriculum and will bring a vision for the future of the Writing Program at Haverford. The Writing Program provides a suite of required first-year writing seminars staffed by faculty from across the College and a cohort of visiting postdoctoral fellows; it also offers programming and events for faculty and students to increase the visibility of academic research and writing on campus and to foster conversations about writing. The Writing Program collaborates with the Writing Center, the Office of Academic Resources, and other campus partners to prepare student writers to write across the curriculum and beyond. In addition to administering the program, the Director will teach up to three courses per year, including at least two writing seminars. The position will be located in the Writing Program.
Responsibilities
The Director of the Writing Program will
Provide vision and leadership for the Writing Program, advancing best practices in undergraduate writing pedagogy
Teach at least two writing seminars a year and up to three courses total
Administer all aspects of the Writing Program, including curriculum design, assessment, staffing, and program development
Oversee the hiring of visiting postdoctoral writing fellows
Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to strengthen the role of writing in the liberal arts curriculum
Support and mentor a diverse group of writing fellows, staff, and faculty contributors, potentially from across all academic disciplines
Cultivate an inclusive writing community at Haverford through programming, faculty support, and student engagement
Required Qualifications Ph.D. in a relevant field in which the candidate has demonstrated investment in writing studies programs and/or scholarship
Demonstrated ability to teach writing at the college level, supported by evidence of effective pedagogy
Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate writing pedagogy
Administrative or leadership experience in a writing program or comparable academic setting, or evidence of ability to assume such responsibilities
Ability to engage constructively with colleagues across the disciplines to integrate writing throughout the curriculum
Experience working with and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds and roles, including students, staff, and faculty
Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and supporting a diverse student body, including support for multilingual students
Desirable Qualifications A compelling vision for the future of writing pedagogy in the liberal arts and for strengthening the Writing Program at Haverford
Experience directing a writing program at a liberal arts college or comparable institution
Experience in faculty development, including supporting colleagues in designing writing-intensive courses
Interest in cross-disciplinary engagement and fostering a campus-wide culture of writing
Record of research in writing pedagogy or related fields
Desire to work at a small liberal arts college
