The Director of the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Development (CSED) at Penn State provides visionary leadership for one of the largest and most comprehensive centers of its kind in the country. The CSED serves over 60 religious and/or spiritual communities and fosters a diverse multi-faith learning environment that supports the academic, emotional, social, spiritual, and ethical development of students. This role is designed for a dynamic and experienced leader committed to promoting inclusion, spiritual wellness, ethical reflection, and community building for a diverse student population—encompassing religious, spiritual, and secular identities. The Director oversees all aspects of the Center, including program development, staff supervision, budget management, and facility operations. The position requires building strategic partnerships within and outside the University community to enhance student success, foster interfaith dialogue, and support the development of both religious and secular communities on campus.
Responsibilities Provide leadership and strategic vision for the Center’s direction and impact.
Oversee budget and facility operations to ensure efficient and effective center functioning.
Supervise staff and develop teams to advance programming and services.
Engage in problem-solving and advocacy to support student well-being and inclusion.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to strengthen interfaith dialogue and community engagement.
Develop programs that meet diverse student needs and foster ethical reflection and spiritual development.
Assess programs and outcomes to inform continuous improvement.
Engage with the campus community to support religious and secular community development.
Qualifications and Skills Expertise in world religions, spiritual practices, ethical issues, and secular worldviews within higher education.
Strong commitment to inclusion and equity.
Proven experience in program development and assessment.
Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
Strong communication and organizational abilities.
Education and Experience Master’s degree plus 10 years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
Preferred fields include higher education, theology, religious studies, counseling, social work, or related areas.
