Do you have a passion for wildlife conservation and a strong knowledge of safety and security? The Indianapolis Zoo is looking for a dynamic Director of Safety and Security to lead our safety and preparedness initiatives. This role is instrumental in ensuring state and local ordinances are maintained relating to the prevention of crime, traffic and parking regulations and that effective security services are used. This role also oversees the development of health and safety programs for various facets of the Zoo and performs activities to promote the maintenance of safe and healthy working conditions.

What You'll Do

  • Oversee and support all safety and security initiatives under the management of the Safety and Security Managers.
  • Serve as the Incident Commander and work in concert with leadership.
  • Implement, manage, and update Emergency Preparedness Policies and Procedures.
  • Develop and lead emergency drills and training initiatives.
  • Serve as the Weapons Team commander and oversee Rides Evacuation Team.
  • Oversee asset protection program and investigate incidents involving acts of dishonesty or theft.
  • Have direct responsibility and accountability for coordinating all employment actions for Safety and Security.
  • Ensure the Security & Safety team responds in a timely and professional manner with the following type of incidents: lost children/guests, visitor & staff injury/illness, and unruly guests.
  • Develop the annual Safety & Security business plan and budget.

What We're Looking For

  • At least ten (10) years of proven knowledge and experience with incident command and Emergency Preparedness programs.
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of experience with Loss Prevention, Safety and Health programs, Asset Management, and Security/Law Enforcement (with the last five years in management).
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must have the ability to acquire a license to carry a firearm.
  • Must be able to be certified on weapons under the Zoo's Use of Force Continuum.
  • A professional and positive attitude while interacting with peers, co-workers and the public.

Bonus Points

  • Bachelor's degree in criminology or related field from an accredited institution.
