General Purpose/Summary Statement
The Director of Resident Engagement and Program Development is responsible for overseeing whole community programming to include departments across multiple communities, including Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. This role ensures that programming and activities meet Bethesda standards and exceed residents and family expectations. This position supports the Activity Directors and Memory Care Directors and collaborates with the Executive Directors and Regional Teams to develop and implement innovative programs that enhance resident engagement and satisfaction.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Develops and leads Activity and Memory Care program-specific training for the organization, including authoring applicable materials, curriculum, and resources.
Maintains effective, regular and professional communications with Activities Directors, Memory Care Directors, Executive Directors and others as needed.
Conducts weekly and monthly scheduled calls with Activities and Memory Care leadership.
Conducts site visits to help ensure standards, compliance and quality assurance among all communities.
Participates in the development of activity and memory care program standards, systems, policies and procedures.
Presents clear and completed proposals to the COO & other leaders, articulating the resources required to achieve desired outcomes.
Participates in the development of activity and memory care programming that provides a dynamic, creative, and socially engaging atmosphere at Bethesda’s communities.
Ensures that all activity and memory care programs focus on Bethesda’s Standards required to meet the needs of residents.
Collaborates with the COO and Regional Team to implement new activity and memory care programs and ensures high utilization, participation and compliance.
Ensures all of Bethesda’s Activity and Memory Care programming are innovative, unique, branded, and well-executed.
Assists in interviewing, onboarding and training new Activities and Memory Care leadership including Activity Directors and Memory Care Directors.
Creates and helps to support policies around standardization and expectations of Activity programs.
Identifies areas of opportunity within communities and works with Executive Director to enhance the program.
Ensures standards are defined, monitored and communicated in a consistent manner.
Assists in opening new communities, including team hiring of Directors, training, onboarding, setup, and new program development.
Participates in and/or presents at industry conferences and community events to promote Bethesda’s propositions in activities.
Develops relationships and a professional network with vendors and other industry leaders.
Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job
While there is not a direct reporting relationship between the community level Directors and the Director of Resident Engagement and Program Development, s/he will have the leadership skills to effectively manage those relationships and positively influence the performance of community-level teams. This includes leading, guiding, and inspiring a diverse team of Activity and Memory Care Directors and their teams to enhance Bethesda’s resident programs.

Familiarity with the regulatory requirements associated with activity and memory care programs in assisted living and memory care communities.

Comfortable speaking in front of a wide variety of groups and leading interdepartmental teams to participate in the success of the program.
Working knowledge of personal computers, scanners, digital copiers, and printers.
Ability to read, write and understand English.
Must maintain a current driver’s license and comply with all requirements of Bethesda’s Auto Policy.
Education/Experience
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Leisure studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Gerontology, Social Services, Psychology, Education or related field is required.
Certifications related to Activities such as Activity Director Certified (ADC), Activity Professional Apprentice Certified (APAC), Activity Professional Certified (APC), Activity Consultant Certified (ACC), Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), and/or other equivalent credentials, as applicable is preferred.
Experience:
At least 5 years in an engagement/activity/memory care related role in a senior living, residential care or similar setting.
At least 3 years in a management/leadership role.
Previous multi-site experience preferred.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Overnight travel by air and/or automobile (70+ percent of time), occasionally in extreme weather conditions. Moderate physical activity for handling objects up to forty pounds occasionally and up to twenty pounds frequently. Mobility to train within the home office and senior living communities. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
