About the Role Our Client is seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Director of Purchasing to lead the transformation of a Purchasing function leading the organization from a decentralized model to a centralized, strategically aligned organization. This is a mission-critical leadership position in our Tribal Government Finance Division, reporting directly to the CFO. The Director of Purchasing will play a key role in scaling purchasing strategy to match the organization's continued growth. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in Purchasing operations within tribal, governmental, or public sector environments, along with a proven ability to build and lead a high-performing team. This role requires hands-on experience in Purchasing process transformation, Purchasing strategy, ERP implementation, grant compliance, and vendor management. You will have the opportunity to drive meaningful impact across a diverse enterprise that includes healthcare, education, public safety, agriculture, and more. This position is on-site with potential for hybrid flexibility after successful integration.
Key Responsibilities Purchasing Strategy & Transformation Lead the transition from decentralized to centralized Purchasing, building systems, processes, and team structure from the ground up Direct full Purchasing lifecycle including RFP/RFQ design, vendor evaluation, negotiations, and contract management Interpret and enforce compliance with Tribal and federal Purchasing guidelines Develop policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure risk mitigation and audit readiness
Team & Culture Leadership Build and lead a team of buyers, vendor specialists, and Purchasing coordinators Collaborate cross-functionally with department leaders to understand diverse Purchasing needs across a complex enterprise Champion a service-oriented, efficient Purchasing culture that adds strategic value to Tribal operations
Systems, Vendors & Continuous Improvement Lead ERP and Purchasing system implementation or upgrade in alignment with financial systems strategy Establish vendor management processes that support quality, performance tracking, and cost savings
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain, or a related field 5+ years of progressive experience across purchasing/Purchasing functions 3+ years managing Purchasing teams, with proven leadership capabilities Experience working in a Tribal, government, military, public sector, nonprofit, or grant-funded environment ERP and ePurchasing system implementation or upgrade experience (within last 7 years) Strong understanding of purchasing controls, compliance, and vendor contracts Director-level management experience in Purchasing Complex purchasing Must pass background and character check; ability to travel as needed
Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with federal grant Purchasing standards Experience across all purchasing levels (buyer, vendor specialist, coordinator) Background in Tribal government or culturally sensitive organizations Demonstrated success in Purchasing transformation/change management Candidates with public-sector experience, military backgrounds, or a desire to relocate to the Southeast are encouraged to apply.
