The Director of Public Safety role is a collaborative, service-oriented position. It exists to ensure that the student experience and all campus operations happen safely and smoothly. The Director of Public Safety is an important representative of Olivet’s mission and values to students, faculty, staff, guests, and other constituents within the broader community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee performance of Public Safety staff and department operations.Interview, hire, and supervise officers.Coordinate field operation shift activities, making sure they are efficient and effective.Administer in-service training for officers and manage testing programs.Ensure that University and departmental policies are followed, including the timely and accurate writing of incident reports.Manage Public Safety’s fleet of vehicles.
Submit an annual budget for the Public Safety Department and administer the budget process for equipment, uniforms, supply purchases, etc.
Implement and enforce policies/procedures related to traffic, parking, and vehicle registration.
Coordinate security and access needs for all special University events, collaborating closely with the Director of Conferences, Athletics department staff, and other event staff as necessary.
Respond to and conduct investigations of reported criminal activity impacting the campus.
Address questions, concerns, and complaints from students, parents, and university employees.
Liaise with local law enforcement and fire department.
Partner with the Executive Director of Campus Safety and other University leaders to ensure the safety and protection of the University community, property, and assets.
SECONDARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Review incident reports and route them to the appropriate University office, as needed.
Lead crime prevention programs, including seminars for faculty, staff, and students.
Provide on-site security coordination at home football games (approx. 5/year).
Serve on the campus Emergency Management Team as well as the Chapel Safety Team.
Personally perform patrols of the campus when needed and as time allows.
Consult with various campus constituencies on crime and safety matters.
Assist Director of Emergency Management with coordination and execution of campus drills.
Assist Director of Emergency Management with activation of the Temporary Emergency Medical Treatment Site, if necessary.
Assist Human Resources with employee termination meetings, as requested.
Participate in freshmen orientation parent panels on campus and area safety.
Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information
EDUCATION
Education: Bachelor's degree or higher required.
Experience: 2+ years as an Assistant Director (or higher) experience in a public safety department. Prefer experience in a higher education environment. Required certifications.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Much of the work is performed in an office setting. However, there can also be a lot of time spent interacting with faculty, staff, and students across campus.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs work of: Public Safety officers and administrative assistant.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION The annual salary for this position is $55,000.
