Summary:

The Director of Nursing (DON) is a key leadership position within a healthcare organization, responsible for leading, overseeing, and managing all healthcare and clinical aspects of nursing services and patient care.

The DON plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality, safe, and effective care; detailed regulatory compliance; and solid team leadership, while also contributing to the overall strategic goals and objectives of the healthcare facility. This position requires strong leadership, clinical expertise, and administrative skills.


Functional duties:

  • Participates in the development of department budget (e.g. wage and salary schedules, staffing needs and making recommendations, salary survey, employee benefits, etc.)
  • Plans and reviews current and future staffing needs and compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Works with other departments to plan and implement large community functions.
  • Takes an active role in strategic planning, continuous monthly training, department head, evening nursing supervision, daily report, etc.
  • Completes annual review of Department Policies and Procedures, Competency Based Job Descriptions and all other paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Works within department head group cooperatively to achieve common goals, assesses needs and recommend changes/establishes administrative policies to carry out objectives.
  • Acts as a resource regarding staffing concerns and disciplines and organizes department staff to work cooperatively to achieve common goals.
  • Assists with the development, organization, and implementation of staff educational programs.
  • Organizes staff function and departmental structure.
  • Identifies and provides training to a qualified individual to fulfill job duties in the absence of the DON.
  • Ability to compel staff to adhere to all Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to attend/conduct meetings and in-service presentations as required.
  • Assures compliance with the IDPH, OBRA, OSHA, and the Board of Trustees
  • Serves as a resource to the department and other departments by recommending/planning/conducting formal and informal continuing education in-services.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Requires current registration as a Registered Nurse by the Illinois State Board of Examiners, BSN preferred.
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years as a professional nurse, with experience in long-term care and progressive supervisory experience
  • Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Director of Nursing or other comparable nursing leadership role
  • Requires extensive knowledge of nursing theories and practices
  • Requires extensive knowledge of Federal, State, and local requirements for a skilled nursing facility
  • Ability to see and hear or use prosthetics adequately so that the tasks of this position can be fully met, including the use of supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to stand and walk up to 60% of the workday
  • Ability to bend, turn, reach overhead, and below knees throughout shift
