Summary:
The Director of the Metals Division is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for overseeing all aspects of the division’s operations, including production, sales, estimating, and project oversight . This role ensures the successful execution of metalwork projects while driving growth, profitability, and operational excellence. The Director will collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to expand the metals division’s market presence and maintain the highest quality standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Production & Operations Oversight: Oversee daily operations of the metals production shop, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency.
Coach and develop the metals team (lead, fabricators, technicians, supervisors).
Monitor job schedules and coordinate production timelines with Project Management and Installation.
Implement and enforce operational best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Ensure compliance with internal standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements.
Sales & Client Development: Cultivate and maintain relationships with general contractors, architects, and developers to generate new business opportunities.
Collaborate with Business Development to identify and target key markets for metalwork services.
Participate in client meetings and pre-construction conferences to understand scope and provide technical input.
Estimating & Preconstruction: Lead and manage the estimating process for metals projects, including takeoffs, pricing, and proposal development.
Review drawings, specifications, and RFPs to produce accurate and competitive bids.
Work closely with the Estimating and Sales teams to ensure feasibility and profitability of proposals.
Track estimate success rates and analyze performance for continuous improvement.
Project & Financial Management: Monitor project progress, timelines, budgets, and profitability metrics across metals jobs.
Assist in resolving technical or production-related issues that impact job delivery.
Collaborate with Project Managers and Operations to ensure alignment from sales through closeout.
Own and report on division KPIs such as sales pipeline, win rate, production efficiency, and gross margin.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in architectural metalwork, millwork, or construction-related manufacturing.
Proven track record in operations management, sales, and estimating.
Strong understanding of metal fabrication techniques, shop workflow, and project lifecycle.
Skilled in reading and interpreting architectural and shop drawings.
Excellent leadership, communication, and client relationship skills.
Proficient in estimating and ERP systems (e.g., Excel, INNERGY, etc.).
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field preferred. Equivalent experience considered.
