Role Overview
The Director of Materials Engineering will lead a cross-functional team with significant technical depth to execute complex, long-term research and development programs in the areas of materials science. This role will have direct leadership responsibility over a team that is conducting cutting-edge work that enables advanced manufacturing capabilities, specifically additive manufacturing. The Director will work closely with the Director of Manufacturing Process Engineering and other teams to ensure project milestones are met and the team has the resource capabilities needed to be successful.
Responsibilities
The Director of Materials Engineering leads a cross-functional team to execute advanced research and development programs in materials science, driving innovation to support additive manufacturing capabilities. This role collaborates closely with manufacturing process engineering and other teams to align project goals and timelines, while overseeing project planning, budgeting, and milestone delivery. This role directs metallurgical labs across sites to ensure operational excellence. The Director provides technical guidance and subject matter expertise in materials science and post-processing techniques. They communicate program status and risks to executive stakeholders. They ensure adherence to project and change management best practices. The position fosters a culture of flexibility, agility, and continuous improvement. They identify and implement process enhancements to improve equipment performance and material quality.
Requirements
10+ years' experience leading technical project teams
15+ years' experience executing technical projects
Subject matter expertise in materials science, and related post-processes
Experience managing complex projects on time and within budget while managing the expectations of multiple stakeholders
Ability to develop and deliver program updates to executive stakeholders
Strong understanding of project and changing management principles
Experience working within a toll gate review process for development projects
Ability to demonstrate flexibility and agility in a growing company
Master's or Ph.D. degree in a related field or equivalent, relevant experience
Jet engine design, analysis, or materials engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced materials science and engineering knowledge
Experience in material application engineering
Experience working in a development setting
Experience in manufacturing programs
Experience with material post-processing
Experience with trouble-shooting and improving equipment and processes
Experience in or around a metallurgical laboratory
Structured problem solving experience
Lean knowledge and/or experience
The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

In compliance with Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the salary range for this position is $156,938-$245,163 base salary. Please note that wage information is a general guideline only, and we will consider factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, and market conditions when extending an offer.
