Function:
The Director of Liturgy and Music Ministries is responsible for facilitating the worship life of the parish community by coordinating and providing liturgical and music experiences which encourage full, active, and conscious participation of the assembly in liturgy, strengthen the parish's journey of faith, and empower members of the community to exercise their various liturgical and music ministries.
Responsibilities
- Directs all parish worship, including the planning of liturgical seasons and sacramental celebrations.
- Create Worship Aids as needed.
- Plan all aspects of special events like Spirit Nights, Penance Services, etc. in coordination with pastor and other staff as needed.
- Create notices for bulletins or announcements to keep community informed of liturgical opportunities for prayer, worship, and spiritual growth.
- Update parish calendar as needed.
- Coordinate and attend all music/liturgical rehearsals for Holy Week and First Communion.
- Coordinate with Children's Choir (Christmas) and Apostle's Choir as needed.
- Meet with engaged couples and grieving families to give information on appropriate wedding/funeral celebrations.
- WEDDINGS
- Maintain Wedding Information sheet for the parish.
- Meet with (or communicate digitally with) all wedding couples to make sure they have access to the resources they need.
- OK all wedding music choices to be sure they are liturgically correct, even when not hired to play or sing.
- FUNERALS
- Recruit and direct Funeral Choir. Practice as needed prior to funerals.
- Meet with families when possible to help walk through the funeral planning process.
- Contact funeral home with names of cantors, accompanists as needed.
- Arrange for servers, ushers, lectors, or other liturgical ministers as needed.
- Prepare readings for lectors as needed.
- Arrange for a sub to cover the above duties if on vacation.
- Serves on parish staff and parish Leadership Team. The parish is engaged with the Divine Renovation model of parish renewal.
- Meet with pastor regularly
- Attend parish staff meetings
- Assist pastoral staff in making informed liturgical decisions.
- Recruits, trains, and schedules all music ministers (cantors, accompanists, instrumentalists) and participates as an accompanist or cantor regularly at liturgy.
- Work with all musicians as needed - individually or in groups - to enhance and improve their ability to perform their ministry to the best of their ability.
- Manually schedule all musicians to pair cantors/accompanists appropriately according to their ability and availability.
- Work with parish staff to create schedule in the Ministry Pro system and manually input musicians into the schedule.
- Find subs for people who can't minister as scheduled.
- Find musicians for Holy Days, Spirit Nights, Penance services and other special events during the church year.
- Maintain contact with all musicians to make sure they update their schedules.
- Send out music lists and reminders.
- Provide special instructions - verses to sing, tempos, changes to songs, baptisms, OCIA, songs that need to be taught, intention responses, etc. as needed.
- Provide links to new music so cantors and accompanists can hear and learn it as they prepare for liturgy.
- Provide hard copies of music for cantors and accompanists who may need them.
- Update the cantor binder weekly.
- Update the hymn boards weekly.
- Coordinates all liturgical ministers: presiders, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, servers, musicians, sacristans, and ushers. Must have a working understanding of each of these ministries and be prepared to work with ministry coordinators to recruit and train new ministers.
- Schedule all ministers needed for all public worship services for the parish, including: weekend Masses, Holy Days, other parish services.
- Work closely with ministry coordinators to stay up to date on training, scheduling, and any other needs.
- Maintain contact with all ministers to make sure they update their schedules.
- Find subs as needed for all ministries.
- Find ministers as needed for Holy Days, Spirit Nights, Penance services, and other special events during the church year.
- Provide training as needed for all ministries.
- Work with visiting presiders to make sure they have everything they need.
- Oversee all annual ministry training events.
- Provides leadership and assistance to the parish Sacred Worship Committee, the Art and Environment Committee, the Music Selection Committee, and the ad hoc Liturgical Season Planning Committee.
- Attends monthly Sacred Worship Committee meetings. Acts as liaison between the committee and pastor as needed.
- Leads the Music Selection Committee - notifies the committee of meetings, assigns Sundays/Holy Days for each member to work on, shares seasonal themes as available.
- Is available to answer questions and act as liaison between the Sacred Worship Committee and the Art and Environment Committee.
- Leads the ad hoc Liturgical Season Planning Committee - bringing together disparate members of the faith community to discuss readings and develop themes to set a direction for liturgical seasons including music and environment ideas.
- Oversees the aesthetic décor and cleanliness of the worship space, the provision of sacred vessels and vestments, the maintenance of instruments, sound system, and liturgical resources.
- Schedule tuning and repair of pianos (6' Yamaha Grand and P22 Yamaha upright) and organ (two manual, 37 rank Moller, rebuilt by James Benzmiller in 1980).
- Organize and maintain parish music library.
- Make sure ONE LICENSE and other music licenses are current, useful, and being paid correctly according to usage;
- Manually "report" all songs sung for masses that are live streamed or in worship aids to ONE LICENSE.
- Order liturgical supplies as needed - e. g. hosts, wine, candles, vestments, incense, etc.
- Know how to operate sound system, choir mics, regular mics. See to their proper storage and maintenance.
- Make sure pianos are plugged in at all times.
- Make sure music area in church and Spirit Hall is clean, organized, and set up appropriately for the liturgical season.
- Communicate with Tech Team regarding sound system, live streaming.
- Prepares and manages the Sacred Worship budget in conjunction with the Sacred Worship committee, pastor, and finance director.
