Key Responsibilities
Human Resources Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all human resource functions, including staffing, performance management, employee relations, compliance, on boarding and policy development
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Maintain and update employee records, job descriptions, and organizational policies
- Oversee the recruitment process, including job postings, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding
- Manage compensation, benefits, and payroll in collaboration with the Controller
- Provide support and guidance to managers and staff regarding HR issues and conflict resolution
- Facilitate training and development programs to support staff growth and program goals
- Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the organization
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all human resource documents/matters
- Additional duties as required/approved by Executive Director
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive volunteer program to support the shelter's operations and programs
- Recruit, screen, and onboard new volunteers, ensuring a positive and welcoming experience
- Schedule and assign volunteers to appropriate roles based on shelter needs and individual strengths
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and track hours of service
- Provide ongoing communication, training, and support for volunteers
- Organize volunteer appreciation and recognition events
- Collaborate with shelter departments to identify volunteer needs and create meaningful roles
- Ensure volunteers uphold the shelter's mission, values, and standards of conduct
- Ensure kitchen staff track provider meals to shelter
- Ensure monthly "thank you" notes to meal providers have been sent
- Commitment to the mission of serving individuals experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity with dignity and compassion.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to manage complex employee relations issues.
- Strong knowledge of HR laws and best practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments to achieve organizational goals.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Bachelors or associate degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field or 5 years of progressive HR experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Experience managing volunteer programs is strongly preferred.
- Experience with ADP is a plus
- Familiarity with nonprofit or social services environments a plus.
- Experience in organization design and succession planning is preferred.
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification preferred.
- Typical office environment with occasional evening or weekend hours for volunteer events or urgent HR matters.
- Some local travel may be required for recruitment, training, or community outreach
