Director of Financial Operations

Salary: $90,000 - $120,000 per year Position Summary The Director of Financial Operations oversees all financial and accounting functions of Thrive Virginia, including budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls. This position is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial operations, particularly related to federal grants and restricted funds, and aligning financial practices with organizational goals and applicable regulations. The Director of Financial Operations supervises accounting staff and serves as a key advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on fiscal strategy and sustainability. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 40-hour-per-week, exempt position (FTE 1).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Financial Management & Oversight Maintain integrity of financial systems and ensure compliance with internal policies, GAAP, and all federal, state, and local regulations. Oversee accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting. Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard organizational assets. Supervise preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Ensure timely and accurate recording of all transactions. Lead the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating budget and forecasts. Provide strategic financial analysis and scenario planning to support long-term sustainability. Grant and Compliance Management Manage all aspects of federal and state grant accounting, including compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance and cost principles. Prepare financial reports for funders and support program staff with grant budget development and monitoring. Coordinate and provide documentation for annual audits and grant monitoring visits. Review all financial reports for accuracy and grant compliance before submission. Leadership & Team Management Supervise and mentor finance/accounting staff; conduct regular performance evaluations. Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and training of finance staff. Serve as a resource and backup for all accounting functions as needed. Organizational Support Attend leadership and management meetings; contribute financial insights to strategic discussions. Prepare the financial section of the annual CAP report. Present financial updates to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors. Support capital asset management and large project budgeting. Systems and Process Improvement Lead implementation and optimization of accounting systems and software. Continuously evaluate and improve financial workflows and processes.
Non-Essential Duties Coordinate professional development and training for finance staff. Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO.
Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. Experience in nonprofit accounting highly preferred. Experience managing federal and/or restricted grant funding preferred. Supervisory or team leadership experience would be a plus. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and fund accounting. Familiarity with OMB Uniform Guidance and federal grant compliance. Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., MIP Fund Accounting, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and team-building abilities. Other Requirements Valid drivers license and reliable transportation. Proof of personal automobile insurance. Ability to travel occasionally for meetings.
Physical Requirements Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
