Job Title: Director of Engineering / Lead Systems Engineer Location: Norwood MA Reports to: CEO & COO<BR>Type: Full-time
About the Role: We are seeking a highly skilled and hands-on technical leader to guide the development and continuous improvement of our industry-leading gas detection products. This individual will coordinate directly with the executive team to define and execute the product roadmap, lead a high-performing engineering team, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure excellence across hardware, firmware, and software systems. This role combines strategic leadership with deep technical involvement, especially in firmware development for our detectors (handheld, vehicle-mounted, and docking stations), sensor systems, and user interface design.
Key Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership: o Collaborate with the CEO and COO to establish technical direction and priorities for new projects and product lines. o Drive improvements in current products, including software and firmware enhancements for detector integration. Team & Project Management:<BR>o Work closely with individual engineers to define priorities, provide mentorship, and foster transparent communication. o Build and maintain a high-performing engineering team, engaging and managing external developers when needed. Firmware & Hardware Development:<BR>o Lead firmware development for detectors (handheld, vehicle-mounted, and docking stations), ensuring reliability and performance. o Support debugging and testing of the existing codebase, and contribute to ongoing improvements and refactoring. GUI/UX Development: o Coordinate with external developers to deliver a modern, intuitive, and industry-leading user interface experience. Sensor & Materials Innovation:<BR>o Advance the development and refinement of catalytic combustion sensors. o Provide technical input on filter material selection and design improvements. Customer & Compliance Interface:<BR>o Communicate directly with customers to address application-specific questions or integration challenges. o Maintain and update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as required for compliance and safety standards.
Qualifications: Proven experience in engineering leadership roles, ideally in embedded systems, firmware, or instrumentation. Strong background in firmware development for embedded systems (e.g., C/C++, microcontrollers). Experience working with or developing sensor technologies, especially gas detection or catalytic combustion sensors. Familiarity with GUI/UX development processes and collaboration with design teams or vendors. Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams and manage external development resources. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills. Comfortable interfacing with customers and working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Experience in sensor technology, particularly catalytic combustion sensors, is highly preferred. Knowledge of filter materials (e.g., ceramics, polymers, composites) and their behavior in sensing environments. Strong analytical and laboratory skills, including familiarity with relevant instrumentation and data analysis. Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with cross-functional teams and external customers.
Preferred Experience: Background in environmental sensing, industrial safety equipment, or similar regulated hardware/software products. Experience with safety documentation and SDS requirements. Hands-on experience with product testing, debugging, and iterative improvement.
