About the role
As a founding member of our technology team, the Director of Engineering will play a pivotal role in shaping both our product vision and technology trajectory. You will lead and grow our engineering function from the ground up, partnering closely with the CEO and other leadership to define strategy, culture, and execution. This is more than a management role, you'll be an architect of our future.
What you'll do Strategic & Technical Leadership Define and execute the engineering vision, strategy, and roadmap in alignment with company and Product goals. Collaborate closely with Product/Engineering leadership to translate business needs into a robust and prioritized engineering roadmap. Champion engineering best practices, quality standards, and architecture principles that support scalability, performance, and compliance (especially in regulated data environments).
Product & Agile Delivery Partner with Product and Designers as you lead the Engineering department to ensure user-centric development and rapid iteration on features based on user feedback. Build and manage agile development processes, focusing on predictable delivery, continuous improvement, and fast feedback loops. Drive a culture of experimentation, learning, and continuous delivery to accelerate innovation.
Team Building & People Management Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing engineering team, including managers, architects, and individual contributors. Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture that empowers teams and promotes professional growth. Implement performance management systems, career development paths, and succession planning within the software engineering team.
Data & Compliance Oversee the secure and ethical handling of sensitive human data throughout the engineering lifecycle. Ensure compliance with data privacy and security regulations (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR) and industry best practices. Guide the development of robust data-sharing frameworks and APIs to enable frictionless, auditable collaboration across stakeholders.
Qualifications Required 10+ years of progressive engineering experience, with at least 5 years in senior leadership roles. Must have 0 to 1 build experience and scaled a start-up from scratch Track record of high performing, inclusive, and mission driven culture Deep technical expertise in full-stack development, cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP), data systems, and APIs Strong understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, Observability, and Security best practices Expert in GitHub, JIRA, Confluence, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes Strategic mindset with ability to translate business goals into engineering priorities
Preferred Experience in health-tech/consumer tech/clinical trials/biotech/life sciences in regulated space is a plus Build and scale complex systems or data-centric products Familiarity with compliance and security standards relevant to accessing human data
Compensation & Benefits
The expected base pay range for this position is $180,000 - $220,000, based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for performance-based variable compensation and an equity grant, depending on the position and level.
